I asked this earlier and now can't find it but did not see anyone get back to me. How common is it to retain fluid once on insulin, I was on avandia too and that does cause it but am off now and its gone down a bit but still there and is troublesome.

I had really high BG numbers when on Orals with Avandia, Glyburide and Metformin,  Just started insulin on Monday the 8th (Humalog rapid and Humalin N at night) , still taking the metformin as a precaution to weight gain from the insulin.
Although the new numbers are great with the insulin, the scale says I've gained about 8 lbs in a 5 days. Most of it is fluid, as I feel really bloated and sloshy, even though I haven't been drinking as much water. I kind of think that may even be the reason. Before , I drank gallons of water everyday, to help reduce the high numbers, but now, I;m kind of shy about drinking as much, except when Im thirsty, a bit scared that it will drop the BG number even more and I will have to eat again. So my body may be retaining the water it does have, because its not getting as much as it used to, kind of storing it to prevent dehydration. I'll be asking the doc and pharmacist about this and will post again when I find out. - Hope this helps abit to know your not alone in this. I don't get the swelling I did with the Avandia, but am retaining fluid just the same. Hopefully It will go away too

From what I understand even with fluid retention you should still drink the water.
I am off the avandia a month now and fluid retnetion is almost totally gone, quit taking the duritetics.

Hi!  Did you know that insulin causes your body to retain sodium, and consequently makes you retain fluid?  It is one of those unfortunate side effects of insulin.  The only way to combat this problem is to reduce your sodium intake.  Not only should you stop using salt, but you should watch the sodium levels in prepackaged foods.  That, and limiting your fluid intake should help keep the swelling down to a dull roar.  Barring that, you may want to talk to your doctor about your concern and ask for a mild diuretic.  Hope this helps.  Ruthie  ;)

Hi Chickadee,
Although I am not on insulin, I have had problems with fluid retention since my 20's.  The two important things you can do (as have been mentioned) are reduce sodium intake (this will happen very quickly if you go off most processed foods, frozen dinners, etc.) and to keep drinking a lot of water.  The water helps flush out the salt and when you drink a lot of it, your body will hold on to less.  It's worked for me although I still have some problems with it.
Hope this helps.

Chickadee, I think it would
be a good time to see an
endo to check out the fluid
retention. There are other diseases or meds which cause retention of fluid also. Autoabs. or some bp meds can cause Lupus which also makes you retain more fluid so it's important to get this checked out by an endo.
Do you have other symptoms as well such as sores in mouth or swollen lymph nodes?

I started Lantus one month ago, and still take the Metformin and glucotrol,I have seen more water retention even though I take a water pill hydrochlorothiazide, I have noticed that if I eat anything from a can I will be swollen for awhile and gain about 6 lbs in water for at least two days so I assume that it is the sodium since I do not cook with much salt.I am not usually a canned food person,I try to cook fresh foods but in a hurry I might do so,I have had to eliminate canned anything except for sardines.Even a hot dog would cause problems.Just anything which is processed.
