Hey guys,
I am new to the board and I was diagnosed with Type 1 when I was 20 years old and I am now 28.  I haven't always been a good checker of my blood sugars until recently and I have noticed something strange.  Since I am taking better control of my condition I have been having weird sensations in my arms and legs.  My arms feel like my somenone is squeezing my armpit and cutting off circulation and I get tingling all through my arms and into my fingers.  My wrists feel weird sometimes and I get a tingling from my wrist that goes into my fingers.  My legs feel the same.  I get a weirs sensation in my legs right around the groin area (same as the armpit feeling) and I get almost a flushed feeling and tingling in both feet.  Yesturday my toes were so cold that it felt as if I was walking on ice.  I am a little worried about this and the worst of it is in my arms.  When I stretch it seems to go away for a while also when I take a warm shower.  Oh, also in my ankles I get a throbbing feeling which is also in my sides.  Could this have something to do with taking better care of my sugars?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks and take care.

Steve

Steve, first let me welcome you here. My first though that this my be nephropathy, (nerve damage )usually from high sugars .. but not so sure it does sound like a circulation problem..you may have a dislocated disk in your neck or back or a pinched nerve. I would certainly see your Dr about this.

Welcome to the group, Steve.  Glad to learn that you are now checking your sugars more regularly.  How have they been running.  You might want to join us on the "morning" thread, and post your numbers with us.  We post any blood sugar, any time of day...and some are NOT pretty.  But it is our way of staying in touch, and keeping  honest about our diabetes.
Your concern is not an unusual one.  "Pins and needles" feelings in the limbs and extremities can indeed be a sign of neuropathy.  It can also indicate some kind of circulatory issue.  It could be a sign of some spinal problems as well.  Your doctor would be better equipt to make a call, because he knows more about you (your medical history, activity level, habits, etc.)  Please bring these questions up with your endocrinologist, or ask for a consultation with a neurologist, for an expert on such things.  And stay in touch and let us know how you are doing, OK?  Again, welcome!  sheryl

Symptoms of neuropathy (pain, tingling, burning feelings etc) are often worse when control improves. If you keep up the better control they should improve some. However, neuropathy symptoms very from person to person so the degree of improvement will vary too. I started having neuropahty symptoms after going on the pump. My bs control improved very quickly and it took about 9 months of excelent bs control to see some improvement in my neuropathy symptoms. three years after going on the pump I still have some mild symptoms on occasion but they come and go. There are medications that can help with symptoms. Neurontin and Elavil are two i can think of off of the top of my head. I am on elavil, neurontin didnt work for me. I dont take elavil everyday but it does help when symptoms are bothering me and it helps me sleep. My symptoms are worse at night.

Keep us updated. ;)

My husband (not a diabetic) had a lot of the same things going on in his leg.  I highly advise you to see a doctor too, but when he went about his tingling/numbness, he was told several years ago to just live with a little numbness.....last year he was found to have a herniated disk and was told that that was not only causing all the back pain, but also the numbness in his leg (and then his hand too) He was referred to a surgeon.  We didn't go that route, but decided to look into other alternatives.....some exercises have been helping him as well as some nutritional supplements/changes have brought back feeling to his leg and hand and he is virtually out of pain as well.

Lack of control or inability to CARE about diabetes..
in the sense of the tingling of the arms/back..
NEUROPATHY (someone mentioned nephropathy.. that is NOT nerve damage, but disease of the kidney.. nephr/o = kidney.. neur/o = NERVE)
DIABETES can and will effect the nerves.. ALL the nerves of the body..
the peripheral nerves (those that are in the hands, feet and torso, except for internal) then the autonomic nerves,,, those of the internal organs AND brain..
yes NEUROPATHY can effect the internal organs and brain (most do not realize). It can cause strokes, gastroparesis (nerve damage to the stomach and intestines), it can effect the nerves in the lungs, heart, bladder, ect.
Diabetes causes ALOT of complications.. Not just type 1 but also type 2 (even though they are two totally different diseases, albeit since they both involove glucose metabolism they are classified as the same, but they are NOT).
   DIABETES
   1. leading cause of ESRD (end stage renal disease)
   2. leading cause of non-traumatic lower limb amputations (caused by neuropathy)
   3. leading cause of strokes and heart attacks
4 DEATH.. diabetes KILLS more people annually than breast cancer AND AIDS combined.
