1049 steps yesterday, had a lazy morning. I actually stopped myself from getting further down & out and FORCED myself to move and do laundry, dishes, vaccum.....instead of feeling tired and sitting or sleeeping and getting WORSE! Missed Yoga class ~ had kid pick up duty that ran later than I planned. GOTTA LOVE 'EM!!!!!! |

I've read this board for a bit and I've tried to figure out how one's footsteps equates to exercise/weight loss... I mean, I know if you walk more, you'll be healthier but what is the normal number of steps one is supposed to take? In one post mj you said you walked 2000 steps and you were bummed...(or it sounded like you were) and then Marie is at 13,000....what's it all about, Alfie? Peace,Cheryl |

Cheryl, The recommendations say something like "the average person should walk at least 10,000 steps a day". I remember when I bought my first pedometer and I wore it all day and at the end of the day it said something like "1,800" and I remember the first few days that I consecutively did more than 10,000...lol. As far as weight loss goes, I can't tell you how the walking/steps helps with that because I made a whole lot changes over a period of time that helped me drop 70 pounds. I'm sure the walking played a part but how big of a part I don't really know. (I do know that I've read that if you want walking to be the bulk of your weight loss routine you have to consistently do more than 14,000 steps a day.) I still do the whole pedometer thing because it reminds me to get off my behind. For me, it's a smile at the end of the day when the numbers are higher and a gentle reminder to move more when they are low. It's a motivational thing. And I'm all for whatever motivates me...lol That's the same reason I post to the board... because I can come back later and see the numbers... just a motivational thing. (Although I've been slacking about posting... anywhere lately.) ~Marie |

thanks, Marie...I had no idea about any of it. DH and I have been walking for about a month and a half now...we walk 3 miles everyday (except Sat. and Sun)....so the other day I counted my footsteps. We do a lap style thing with our driveway and a point down the road. (We discovered that hiking for a walk in the mountains could easily lead to turning an ankle or something so we stay on smooth surfaces if we can) But each lap was 600 steps and at this point we do 12 laps. At the beginning of Nov. we're going to increase it to 15 laps. But too, we're climbing up and down inclines and hills so I think it's pretty healthy....was just curious about this thread....I have lost 6 pounds so...I hope it continues. thanks for your time in explaining all that you did...... see ya. Peace,Cheryl btw...congratulations on your weight loss!!!! way to go!!! |
