I take 15 units of Lantus in the morning. I find mornings work best for me and I don't need to split my dose to get 24 hour coverage ..so I don't. My carb to insulin ratio is 15 to 1. I typically eat a bowl of cereal in the morning and 2 units typically covers me..so if I will work out I will take 1 unit. I always test before the workout and immediately after. IF I feel funny at all during the workout..I test and eat some fast acting candy.
As far as looking funny eating candy and testing during the workout. I too workout in a gym. In fact, I just returned from Hawaii and I bought a 2 week membership to a very nice/very busy gym to use while I was there. At first I was all caught up in how it looked that I had these things on my machine and how it looked that at times, I needed to gobble skittles mid workout. After 2 days I decided I didn't give a rats how it looked! I am there doing my thing and I do it my way. I am one of those that tries very hard to get into my own zone while working out and the mental for me is almost more important then the physical. I realized that anyone watching someone else in a gym isn't really there for the workout and I could care less what they think. I am a big admirerer of people that go and workout and do whatever works for them...get your groove on and you will feel as if you are the only one in the room! ;)
By the way, I admire all the questions you have been asking and how you seem to be trying very hard to figure out what works for you..keep going!
