My grandson had braces put on his teeth this morning and he is miserable. The orthodonist didn't offer him anything for pain relief. He's been taking Xtra strength Tylenol every 4 hrs., but it's not even making a dent in his pain.
Do you ladies have any suggestions to help him through this rough patch?
Karen

They should call the dentist back and get something. I would suggests something like oralgel but not sure how it works with braces.  Poor thing!

Both of my kids had braces and initially had some discomfort, but never had pain. We just used what the doc suggested (I think it was Tylenol).  If he is truly in pain, you should call the doctor...sounds like something may be wrong.

Two of mine had braces. They were uncomfortable for awhile but no pain. I gave them tylenol. They might be to tight for him. Talk to the dentist.

I tried to load a picture of him to show you why he's suffering -- but it took up have the screen and left me no room to post.
Ryan month is shaped like my X's, he doesn't just have an overbite his teeth are very small and spaced and the palate is slanted outward also. He said he's using Orjel on the soft tissue behind the upper lip because the braces are slicing it to bits.
Thank you for all your well wishes and suggestions -- the ortho said if he medicated him, he'd become too dependent on it and would want it for each tightening.
Karen

Oh my, the poor little guy. So is this pain something that will go away soon enough for him? He surely can't endure this the life of his braces.

Thank you Angelbear for caring so much for the woes of the rest of us -- Ryan is fighting through the pain -- OraJel still his best friend right now. I'm not sure if he'll suffer through the entire time with problem -- maybe as teeth move further back the braces won't eat into his mouth as much -- hopefully.
He's such an adorable boy that I'm going to share his picture -- I'll say sorry for taking up so much room before hand -- but I'd like to give you an idea why he's having tougher time.

No photo...just a red x.  My kids ortho gave them a special soft wax to use to prevent the braces from cutting up their inside lip tissue.  You might ask for some of that until his mouth becomes used to the hardware.

His mouth WILL toughen up as he progresses.  I know some people suffer terribly with each tightening...and some people have lower pain levels than others.  I have one daughter who sailed through and one who really suffered.  How is his pain level with other "owies"?  TRose

He's a handsome young man. The braces will certainly straighten those teeth out.
Don't worry about the size of the picture. Tell him how nice it will all be when he's done. How old is he?

I read your posts earlier today and immediately called to talk to him, he is doing better and now using the wax -- he said in his now mumbly voice, the wax helps alot.

Trose ... you know you're right, I think I'm taking it harder then he is, I'm a big softie.
I remember one night (about 3 yrs. old) when I had him overnight he got the stomach flu -- he woke me up crying out owie, owie, owie -- he finally got sick, fell back to sleep while granny watched over him the rest of the night. So, I'd say his pain tolerance is much larger than mine. LOL

Angelbear ... I think so too, he's 14 and already girl crazy, that's why no amount of pain will stop him from turning into a ladykiller.
