Kozzie - Do you have access to the English censuses? I have found Alfred with his family in 1881. He was born in Gorleston-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Parents Joseph Briggs born Barking, Essex c1833 and Sarah born Braintree, Essex c1837. Here they are: 1881 Census of England Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Joseph BRIGGS Head M Male 48 Barking, Essex, England Blacksmith Sarah BRIGGS Wife M Female 44 Braintree, Essex, England Joseph BRIGGS Son Male 14 Gorleston, Norfolk, England Blacksmith Mary Ann BRIGGS Daur Female 12 Gorleston, Norfolk Scholar Robert William BRIGGS Son Male 10 Gorleston, Norfolk Scholar Frederick BRIGGS Son Male 8 Gorleston, Norfolk, England Scholar Alfred BRIGGS Son Male 7 Gorleston, Norfolk, England Scholar Henry BRIGGS Son Male 3 Gorleston, Norfolk, England Marian Manager |

By 1891, I am afraid that Sarah was widowed and living in the workhouse in Romford, Essex. So I searched for a death record for Joseph and found this. He was age 50. Deaths Dec 1885 (>99%) | Briggs | Joseph | 50 | Romford | 4a | 172 | | Marian |

Kozzie - Going back to 1851, I have found Joseph with HIS parents, William and Esther. 1851 Living in Are Street, Barking, Essex. William Briggs 59 Fisherman born c1792 Esther Briggs 57 Wife born c1794 Joseph Briggs 17 Son Blacksmith born c1834 1841 Esther age 40 is living with Mary age 20, Eliza age 15 (both listed as servants) and Joseph age 8. Perhaps her husband was away fishing that night. There are a few other fishermen's wives on the same page. It says that Esther was not born in the county of Essex. Hope all of this is helpful. Hi Kozzie We are not certain, but we feel this could be Joseph and Sarah's marriage. There is no other marriage in the records that fits the timeframe and other details. Essex is adjacent to London. Marriages Dec 1855
BRIGGS Joseph London 1c 195 CARTER Sarah London 1c 195 Marian

Yes Kozzie, that is the Alfred Briggs whose family I traced back for you. Please note that he was born in Gorleston-on-Sea, Great YARMOUTH (not Yawnmouth), in the county of Norfolk. Hope it was helpful. Marian Manager |

Kozzie - he must have gone to Australia after 1901, since he was on that census in the Royal Navy -- see message no. 6. Marian Manager |
