I am trying to trace the origins of my ggrandfather Ambrose Hughes who settled in Scotland with his family sometime between 1860and 1871 which is the first year they appeared in the Scottish census.  He was born in Ireland in 1831 and died in Scotland  in 1889.

According to his death certificate his parents were William and Catherine Hughes and his father was a weaver.  Ambrose married Catherine Logan whose parents were Patrick Logan and Catherine Carr. They had 4 children all born in Ireland, Catherine 1846,  Patrick 1848,  Bridget 1850 and William 1856.

I have traced descendants of Patrick.  His son Patrick emigrated to the US and in a US census he declared his father as born in N.I.

H ello I'm Suzy one of the manager and I have been looking for details for you.
do you have William in 1881 Scotland census with wife Cathrine (no E) daughter by same name, Bridget and William?
If you do did you pick up that Patrick Hughes lives at same place with his family which while not giving his parents names does have Patricks son named Ambrose too?
You mentioned you had tracked Patricks family to US, I am presuming you are referring to 1st Ambrose's son Patrick?
Catch you soon

Thank you for your help. I do have the 1881 Scotland census.  49 Park Wynd was the residence of my ggrandfather Ambrose.  Listed are his wife Cathrine and their four children, Bridget, Cathrine, William (my grandfather), and Patrick.  Also listed are Patricks children by his first marriage, Agnes, Ambrose, and Cathrine.  Patrick later married again and had a son Patrick who emigrated to the US in 1905. I have traced the descendants of Patrick (jnr.) in Springfield Mass.

Because of size of information I have sent you some census records for your family off list and if your information is correct on Griffith files then we may have a name to work with.
Do you happen to have Patrick (born 1848) son of William Hughes?death certificate or his marriage certificate?
Or Sister Catherine, or Bridget’s marriage or death certificates?
That may give you a place of birth to help pinpoint where family were in Ireland.
With this in mind I went to Scotland's People to check out a few things.
Scottish certificates are brilliant for information.
I have done a search for William and Rose Reilly marriage and there is one match but it is a pay per view site so will let you go there.
If it is the correct one for them you can download it direct to your computer to print out immediately.
I also did a quick check for wills there for Ambrose, Catherine, William and Rose without any success.

If the Griffith land record was correct then we can try for that area for the marriage of Ambrose and Catherine.
Do you know if they were Catholic or Protestant per chance from any certificates or documents you might have?

Should you have certificates please let me know the register numbers so we don’t bother going there.

If you have certificates that are hard to read from Ireland I will find out most appropriate manager for you to send a copy to so they can determine place names and details that might get us finding the leprechaun?treasure we seek.

** Do you have US census details and other records for the family there? Do you want any if you haven't got any..

I will wait to hear back from you and I thank you for your patience.
Suzy

Thanks for your latest.  I have copies of all the census from 1871.  The entries in 1871 in respect of Margret Hughes and Susan Hughes have no connection to the family.

Catherine and Bridget were indeed daughters of Ambrose and Catherine (nee Logan).  Your surmise in respect of Catherine and Thomas is indeed correct. They were the surviving children of William, son of Ambrose.  Thomas was my father and Catherine my aunt.  When his wife Rose died William left Dundee and went to Hartlepool leaving Catherine and Thomas in trhe care of his sisters Catherine and Bridget.  As  far as I am aware he never returned to Dundee but married Eleanor Close in Hartlepool in 1894.  I have a copy of the 1901 census which shows them residing at Staindrop Street, Hartlepool.  I have been unable to find any trace of them after that.

Patrick (born 1848) was the son of Ambrose and brother of William.  I have copies of the death certificate entries for Catherine, Bridget and Patrick.  Patrick died 1898, Catherine died 1906,  Bridget died 1930.   The records give no clues as to where they or their parents were born in Ireland.

I have a copy of the marriage certificate entry for William Hughes and Rose Anne Reilly.  Again no clues as to where in Ireland he was born.  Rose was born in Haddington, Scotland but her parents were Irish, father Bernard Reilly, mother Mary Reilly (nee O'Neill) but nothing to indicatew which part of Ireland they were from.

I have a whole file of the Scottish records for the births, marriages and deaths and if you want I can let you have a list of everything I have.

They were all Roman Catholics.

I have copies of all records of the family in US.

David.

I did an extensive search on Find My Past for death record of either William or his wife Eleanor but without success.  They definitely did not return to Dundee but I have not ruled out the possibility that they may have gone back to Ireland or perhaps emigrated.  This is a line I will be following up.

Have no grave inscriptions for any members although I do recall visiting their grave sites in Balgay Cemetery in Dundee in the days of my childhood.

With regard to Patrick who emigrated to the US he settled in Springfield, Mass. and had two sons Charles and Norman.  Both are deceased as are their spouses. I have been in contact with Noreen daughter of Norman but she coould not provide any information.  The one clue was the entry in the 1930 US census where Patrick declared his father Patrick was born in Northern Ireland.

Suzanne is indeed doing a great job for me as indeed you all are.  The info gleaned by Mike in respect of Eleanor Hughes I am sure is relevant.  While her year of birth is out by 20 years I am sure it is the right one and I have sent off to the GRO for the certificate.

William I think will be a bit more difficult.  I have a sub to findmypast but apart from giving the GRO refs in an entry there are no other details other than the name and if obtaining a copy of a cert. is the only way to find details it could be an expensive means of checking.  Scottish records seem to be streets ahead.

Followed the link you provided  and have ruled out the William in the Mbro record as he had a middle initial 'H'.  The William I am pursuing had no middle name.  That leaves the one who died in Hartlepool 1906 which was before the death of Eleanor in 1912.  I will put the search for William on hold until I receive the cert. for Eleanor which should be about the end of the month.

I have no copies of any Irish certs. but thanks for the offer.

Have had some difficulty signing in.  Have now received the death certificate for Eleanor Hughes but find that she is not the Eleanor Hughes I am searching for.
