Hi
Looking for help in finding any info on my Great Grandfather Edward HICKS

As stated per his Australian death Certificate Edward was born in London - his father's name was James HICKS - mother's name Margaret unknown - Edward was 92 years old when he died so that would have him born in 1859

I have no info on James and Margaret at all

I found his Obituary in the paper and it stated that at the age of nine after the death of his father he was taken to sea by a relative later joining the British Navy which he left in Sydney in 1875

What happen from 1875 to 1883 is unknown but he married in Wilberforce NSW on the 15th September 1883 to Phoebe ROSE they had 4 children - 2 died and 2 survived one being my Grandfather Richard HICKS - they then moved to Newcastle NSW having another 5 children all dying at early ages.

After the birth of their last child Phoebe died in 1896 and Edward then went on and married another 3 times until his death in 1951 in Newcastle NSW

His Obituary also states that he was an active Salvationist and that he drove General Booth around while he was in Newcastle and later he became a preacher for the Methodist and Baptist church

I hope I have supplied enough info and you might be of help to me. Thank you

Cheers Robert

Hi Robert i Totally agree with you,I have found when Someone adds info others seem to follow the same root.I guessed you would have seen the trees.
this is why i added that section.
felt it was not right.

The Strange thing is He is not Listed in the Bmd for that Date.So i knew it must be incorrect. And How they came about Middlesex.is a Mystery.

As you and i know When someone Says london they presume london not England.

Using it as a Basis .I still think he may have been born Elsewhere.and is probably in one of those listings. But its Finding the Correct one.

Have you tried Free bmd.Or freecen.

Mike

Yes it is frustrating when you know people are printing wrong info and putting it all over the internet

Yes I have looked at free bdm's and freecen's - any one of the search results could be my Edward but finding the right one is the hard thing

You mentioned that the British Navy or Merchant Navy would have records how do you go about finding out this info because I have a feeling Edward may have been a deserter from his ship when it was in Sydney because an elderly Aunt said she recalled someone saying this.

Bought a copy of the navy records for Edward Hicks born Colchester - not my Edward they state he was born 20th December 1870 discharged 1907 - those are the risks you have to take to find what you are looking for I'll just have to keep searching

thanks for all you have done

Cheers Robert
