Hi - this is my first message to you so I may not get it right.

I am trying to trace my Gordon ancestors.
My grandfather was Hugh Gordon born c1867 in co Fermanagh  and died 9/11/1935 in Fermanagh St. Clones co Monaghan.
His father was Patrick Gordon (no more details I am afraid).

Census of Ireland 1901

Whitehall Street, Clones, co Monaghan, Ireland

Hugh Gordon, Head, Roman Catholic, read & write 40 yrs   Draper Married Born co Fermanagh
Mary Rebecca, Wife      "           "           "          "     33 yrs                   "        Born   co Cavan
Michael Gordon  Son     "           "           "          "       8 yrs   Scholar              Born   co Monaghan
Hugh Gordon        "        "           "           "    only        6 yrs       "                    Born           "
Patrick Gordon     "         "          "                               4 yrs       "                    Born           "
Annie Gordon     daughter                                           1 yr                              Born          "

Census of Ireland 1911

Gordons Drapers 33 Fermanagh Street, Clones, co Monaghan, Ireland

Hugh Gordon     Head     R/C     read and write   45 yrs   Draper   Widower       Born  co Fermanagh
Hubert Gordon   Son        ""                 ""             16 yrs   Scholar                       Born   co Monaghan
Patrick Gordon     "          ""                  ""             14 yrs       "                                          ""
Annie Gordon    daughter  ""                 ""              11 yrs      "                                          ""
Maureen Gordon    "        ""                  ""                9 yrs      "                                          ""
Martha Gordon       "         ""        read only             7 yrs       "                                          ""
Kathleen Gordon    "         ""             "                     5 yrs       "                                          ""
Andrew Gordon   Son       ""                                   3 yrs                                                  ""

I can only assume that Mary Rebecca Gordon died sometime between 1908 and 1911 because Hugh Gordon then marred Ellen Trainor on 5th June 1911 in the Roman Catholic Church in Cootehill, co Cavan Ireland.  They went on to have at least eight children all born in Fermanagh Street, Clones co Monaghan Ireland.

James Francis Gordon          4/2/1912
Daniel Hyacinth Gordon     18/8/1914   married Dorothy U/k     died  1987 in Manchester
Brigid Teresa Gordon         22/8/1915
Monica Gordon                  10/9/1916
Rita Averil Gordon              13/10/1917 marrried Leslie Adams 2/10/1946  died 1974   My birth Mother
Joseph Anthony                  17/7/1919
Joanna Joan Gordon           17/10/1920  married Joseph Kelly in Harolds Cross Dublin 20/7/1948
Aiden Gordon                     20/11/1922

Apart from the children of Rita Gordon this is all I have.  As you can see I have hit a brick wall and I would be really gratefull if you could go back further for me.

Mike, Michael Gordon rang yesterday, we had a lovely chat but there is a lot of info.  Apparently he didn't even know his grandmothers maternal name.  He did say that Daniel was a very gentle kind man but that he was a bit of a drinker?? and that he was the black sheep of the family.  He came to England in about 1942 and joined the Royal Navy and after the war he joined the RAF.

Michael was Daniel and Dorothys child and Michael doesn't have any.

Bridget Gordon was known as Jet and married a Tom somebody and they moved to Scotland.

Monica married in Ireland he thinks and emigrated to South Africa, they had 3 children and lots of grandchildren.  She has now died

Johanna Joan was known as Joan and was married to Joseph Kelly as we know, they went on the have three children, Mauve, Dermund or Dermot and another girl.  The last Michael heard of them (about 1960) they lived in Fallynoggin or Fallinoggin in S. Dublin.

Daniel never mentioned any of his brothers only his sisters, this could mean they are all dead perhaps.

And this is all he knows, he has got a shoebox in the loft and he is going to get it over the next week and if there is more info he will let me have it
Polly

Mike, how easy is it for you to freely see the 1901 and 1911 census for Cavan or do you have to pay.  I have found most of the Trainors on the 'Search Findings' list but have to pay 5 euros each and that could mount up to a lot of money trying to find the right ones Polly

Mike, thanks for that.  Can you tell me how far Shancrook is from Cootehill and Bailieborough please.    I have joined th I.F.H.F - that is where I found the census info from - but as I say they charge and I can't afford it at the moment.  I sent for Ellen Gordons death certificate but they only looked from 1922 to 1930 so no luck there regards Polly

Hi Polly

There is no such place as Shancrook in Ireland.  I feel certain the place you are looking for is SHERCOCK.

Bailieborough, Shercock and Cootehill are all within about ten miles of each other.  I used to live in the area, so I do know what I am talking about.  Hope this is helpful to you.

Hi Polly

Killybreen is a townland of just 212 acres in the parish of Errigal Trough, which is in the Barony of  Trough in County Monaghan.

The barony of  Trough is made up of two civil parishes:  Errigal Trough and Donagh. Errigal Trough is the northern tip of Co. Monaghan, which forms an arrowhead pointing into Co. Tyrone to the north.  Errigal Trough is bordered by Co. Tyrone to the west, north, and east.  The civil parish of Donagh is south of the eastern part of Errigal Trough, and Co. Armagh lies to the immediate east.  The townlands of the parish of Errigal Trough are published on a map at pages 68 and 69 of Landscapes of South Ulster—A Parish Atlas of the Diocese of Clogher by Patrick J. Duffy (The Institute of Irish Studies, Queen's University of Belfast 1993).

I found this Traynor site in my travels across the web:

Polly - If you go to Google Maps, then key in "Killybreen, Co. Monaghan", a large-scale road map will come up.  You will see that Killybreen is north of Tydavnet village, just near Carrickroe.
