Hi Kate not sure if you can help me on this one Can anyone help me i know i have been rattling on about my Jacobs family for ages, but i have been asking if anyone can help me with finding out how to find my Jewish connections, and the info i have received tells me something i never even thought about me being thick lol. To trace the family backwards to where the family came to England if that is possible! I was wondering if anyone can help me look up George Frederick Jacobs born 1836 approx Salisbury and his Wife Mary Ann Robertson born around 1841 Margate they married in 1860 Shorditch i am looking for their parents i think Georges fathers name could possibly be Samuel but unsure Mary's fathers name was Charles William Robertson b abt 1821 St Leonards Mother Mary but do not know her maiden name If anyone could possibly help me out here i would appreciate it as i do not have access to census's many thanks Dee

Hi Kay thank you so much for all your time and effort and hopefully it isnt going to turn out to be wasting your time. I agree with you wait until the certificate comes thru like you say we will have something concrete to go on then and hopefully i should have it by the end of the week so i will get back to you with that info asap, its funny i was hoping that without not being about to trace them now the silly part i was hoping that this is where my Jewish connections? came in and they had come into the country but that is just me looking for the easy option but also wanting to find that connection if there is one. I will get back to you Kay as soon as the certificate arrives and once again thank you so much for your time and helping me. best wishes Dee |

Hi Kay well the certificate has arrived and it was a bit of a shock as it wasnt what i expected so am really pleased i sent for it and have found we have been tracing the wrong family and opens a whole new field now as i dont know if my family has interbred lol. i will put the info on here for you as it reads on the certificate. 1st Sept 1864 1 Huntsman Street, Walworth James Boy father George Jacobs mother Mary Ann Jacobs formerly Ingram fathers occupation reads as either journeyman shoemaker or joineryman shoemaker ( i have emailed the GRO to see if they can look at the original entry and tell me which it is) Mother couldnt write by the looks of it as it has two xx's with the mark of Mary Ann Jacobs Mother 1 Huntsman Street, Walworth registered 10 Oct 1864. So she wasnt a Robertson as thought she was an Ingram. Funny thing is and it may just be coincedence as Ingram is the surname of G Grandparents back in late 1700's on James's son's (my Grandad) wifes family if that makes sense to you, and Ingram was a witness at the wedding of George and Mary Ann. I hope i have managed to give you something to go on here as it has totally thrown me completly now it felt so strange reading the certificate and seeing in print that your gg grandmother couldnt write, I am glad i have done this in fact makes me want to send for everyones now lol joking would cost a fortune, but hope you can help me. best wishes Dee |

Here's what I've found on the 1871 census: George Jacobs b: 1830c Sailsbury - head - Shoemaker Mary Ann Jacobs b: 1834 Margate - wife Charles Jacobs b: 1860c Lambeth - son Mary Ann Jacobs b: 1862 Newington - daughter James Jacobs b: 1864c Newington - son Elizabeth Jacobs b: 1867c Bermondsey - daughter The address isn't clear from the image but certainly looks like: 26 Brundon Street, Leather Market, St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey. I'll keep looking so check back again. Kay Manager |

Well it's very odd but they aren't very forthcoming on the later census images! I've found Mary Ann Jacobs (nee Ingram) on the 1901 as follows: Mary Ann Jacobs b: 1831c Margate, Kent - Head, Widow- Charwoman. The address is 3 Briant Street, Deptford, London. The thing is that the children are obviously somewhere on the census images, assuming they survived, but because Jacobs is not an uncommon name, it's a bit tricky to work out exactly which marriage could relate to them and who they are on the images. If I manage any of this, naturally I will post further. Kay Manager |

Yes sorry Kay i had a blonde moment yes the children are of james b 1864 and his wife Eliza Allberry, i dont know if there is a connection but with mary ann being an ingram, i am just wondering if there is a connection with the the allberrys and ingrams as they are of one family if that makes sense to you i have a tree with the names on if that would help you fathom it out unless i am mistaken just seems strange that John Ingram b 1793 was in Kent and his daughter eliza married edwin allberry and the families then seem to come from the margate area hence Mary ann so wondering if there has been a bit of interbreeding or not, or just me with a warped mind. lol Dee |

Hi Kay GOOD NEWS!! with the info you gave me yesterday i decided to start putting my tree together on Ancetery and guess what there are two ladies with the same tree as me and everything has dropped into place, the Ingrams actually came over from America and along the line cousins married but have got the tree back to early 1700's on both of Jacobs/Ingram/Allberry lines. Its amazing when you decide to take the plunge and order the right certificate something i wish i had done ages ago, well i did but got the wrong ones lol. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you so much for all your hard work and imput from Mick too along the line over the past year or more in helping me piece together a really hard tree, which may of been a lot easier if i had got the right certificates in the first place. You dont know how much i appreciate your help and expertise and patience you have given me. Once again thank you from the bottom of my heart. best wishes and no doubt if i get stuck again i will bug you for more help in the meantime take care and thank you. Dee

Hi Dee That's really excellent - yes very helpful to have found other relatives! It's suprising how many times we find families married "within" themselves for want of a better expression - cousins, brothers and sisters from one family, marrying brothers and sisters from another - and therefore names crop up over and again. It's always nice to get feedback from members and especially gratifying when our work is met with appreciation. Yes, please do get back in touch again at any time if we can help you further, or indeed any aspect of your ancestry. Best wishes. Kay Manager |
