Hi there,

I am a new member and this is my first post - hope this is the right place.

I'm looking for more info on my g-Grandfather, Thomas Keating. The details I have are as follows:

Parents:     Michael Keating & Margaret Lyons
Siblings:     John, TP, Johanna, Alice,Richard, Bridget, Margaret, Julia, Catherine, John, Michael
Born:         July 1862 - Co Waterford
Emigrated: To Australia aboard the Cuzco, arriving Feb 1883
Married:    Feb 1889 to Susan RYAN - she was born June 1861 in Silvermines, Nenagh, Co Tipperary - her parents were James Ryan and Kate O'Connell/O'Donnell. She arrived in Aust about 1886 with her sister Bridget. Most of the rest of her siblings apparently emigrated to the US.
Children:
Michael, Mary K, Ellen, Margaret, Eileen, Richard & Cissey (my grandmother)

All I know , other than the above is that the family came from Co Waterford. I'd really like to find out where they lived, Thomas' emigration (ie: where from and maybe why?)

Any advice/info/ideas would be monumentally appreciated!!!

Cheers,
Julie

Hi Mike,

Once again I must say an awfully big thanks!!!! to you. You've found my Michael Keating for me and I now have a date of death. It fits perfectly with the year of birth that I have - 1817. Now I just have to find his marriage to Margaret. I have emailed raytracer as you suggested and am waiting on a reply. Fingers crossed.

One question - when putting the deatils into my family history software I am a little confused as to how it should be written. Should it be "Kilcanavee, Rathgormack, Co Waterford, Ireland" or should it read otherwise??

Thanks again for all your help - I'll let you know what I hear from my query.

Mike,

Ooooooh! I was just trying to work it out myself when you messaged. That explains it! This family seems to be growing by the second (sort of!)

I'll try that Waterford Library site a little later  might be up by then.

Julie i found this It may interest you .

KILCANAVEE, Cill Cheannabhuidhe - "Canaway's Church"; John Fleming gives somewhere another (somewhat far-fetched) derivation, scil:- Cill Chinn Mhaige. Site of the early church on Keating's farm and the outlines of the circular rampart, enclosing two acres or thereabouts, are distinctly traceable. Some interresting dresses stones from a primitive doorway are built into a fence by the roadside. Area, 825 acres.
S.DD.(a) Gleann Fuinnse - "Ash-tree Glen."
(b) Cruachán (Paorach) - "Little (Mountain) Pile", little in comparison with the Comeragh heights behind it to the west, but itself in reality is a considerable hill, 1,285 feet high
