This is for a friend of mine who did not know very much about her Grandfather. Her Mom says this would be him, as she remembers him having a sister Violet (aka Dolly). I have been told he was born in 1892 & died in 1942 and had been in the East Surrey Regiment (Calvary). any help is very much appreciated. Others found this much on Ancestry.com last Friday for me. Marilyn (ps I hope I have requested this properly!)

Hi Marilyn Thank for your message and welcome to our site. I will get back to you tomorrow when I have done some searching. Strangely enough, both Kay and I are related, albeit distantly, to the Lavender family of Mitcham! Please be sure to check regularly on the "L" surname board for our findings. Marian Manager |

Hi Marilyn I may be able to put you in touch with Tarina Lavender. She has done extensive research into her family over many years so she will have a great deal of information on the Lavenders. Please let me know your wishes on this. I am directly descended from Harriet Bray b. Ruislip, Middlesex, 1794. Her brother James married Mary Lavender. It is indeed a small world. Marian |

Marian, If Tarina would be willing I am interested. I could then direct her to my friend & her Mom, if she wanted, or continue to gather the information for them. Thanks, Marilyn |

Hi Marilyn I have now contacted Tarina and will let you know when I hear from her. In the meantime, I checked the original of the 1901 census listing that you gave us. Edward Lavender's father was also Edward and he was already widowed in 1901, age 30. He was born in Ruislip, Middlesex c1870 or 1871. Young Edward's grandparents were David and Amy Lavender, also both born in Ruislip. Marian |

Marian, Does it say what occupation any of them had? Do you know if the other people in the household were cousins to young Edward or maybe Uncle/Aunt. Doris, Edward's daughter thinks he mentioned a cousin, Jason. I think all the little clues are helping her remember things she did not think she knew. Marilyn |

Hi Marilyn I have transcribed the details of everyone in the household on census night 1901. As you will see, David is the head of household, and Amy is his wife. Edward (widower) and Lily are their son and daughter. Jason, Edward and Violet are their grandchildren. We don't know for sure who are the parents of these young children, but we can guess for the moment that Edward is their father, and that he and the grandparents are looking after the children after the loss of their mother. Sydney age 19 is nephew to David and Amy. 1901 Census of England David Lavender Head Married 62 born Ruislip, Middlesex. Occupation: Labourer, timber yard Amy Lavender Wife Married 52 born Ruislip Edward Lavender Son Widower 30 born Ruislip. Occupation: Labourer, timber yard Lily Lavender Daughter Single 19 born Malden, Surrey. Occupation: General Servant Sydney Lavender Nephew Single 19 born Mitcham, Surrey. Occupation: General Labourer Jason Lavender Grandson Single 11 born Mitcham Edward Lavender Grandson Single 8 born Mitcham Violet Lavender Granddaughter Single 6 born Mitcham Marian

OK Marilyn, that's good. Now, I have checked the family ten years earlier on the 1891 census and I find Edward senior living in the same road in Mitcham with his parents David and Annie (Amy in 1901!) and Edward's younger siblings, plus his cousin Sidney. I am going to try and find Edward's marriage. Did you see my message no. 7? 1891 Census Residing at 5 Sibthorp Road (they had moved to No. 9 Sibthorp Rd. by 1901) David Lavender Head Married 51 Occupation: Shop, General Dealer Annie Wife 46 Edward Son Single 21 Occupation: Inn, Barman Rosetta Daughter 14 Domestic Servant Willie Son 13 Lillie Daughter 8 Sidney Nephew 8 Marian

I replied to # 7 to your own address. I have often run into name changes in between census. I have explained to people how it can be mixed up. Who gave the information, who wrote it down, etc. Throws you for a loop sometimes. Glad you found this. Marilyn |

Hi Marilyn I found this death record for Rosa Lavender, who I think could have been Edward's wife. Age 23 sounds about right. Deaths Mar 1895 (>99%) Lavender Rosa 23 Croydon 2a 253 Then I found this: Surname | First name(s) | | District | Vol | Page | Marriages Jun 1893 (>99%) | Lavender | Edward | | Croydon | 2a | 531 | | Thompson | Rose | | Croydon | 2a | 531 | | I could be proven wrong on the above, this is only a suggestion. Hopefully Tarina will have a lot more info. on the family. Marian |

Marian, Tarina says Edward's Mother was a Thompson & died in 1895, so this must be her. Thanks, Marilyn |
