Hi, I am on a search for my Great-Grandfather, William Mayne, born 7/01/1858 either Ballywalter (source from Family Bible) or Belfast (source from Captains Ships List.  I would love to know the names of his mother, father siblings, etc.  He is a bit of mystery in our family as all I know is he left home at 12 and went to sea.  If anybody could through any light on this, it would be appreciated.  I have already found a John Mayne, Ballywalter, 1860's on the valuation list, but don't know if he is any realtion.

Thanks

Hi Mike, Thanks for all you help, Isabella I've just found out was born at sea (chili) so that's why she can't be found, I've got all his details for after his marriage, but not before, we can't find the marriage certifact, so not sure if his parents names are on it.

Thanks again

Hi,

First of all thanks for all your help, it doesn't actually say master mariner, just mariner, so I think we can rule out Devonshire, as noone in the family has any connections there.  As you said the Antrim one looks or looked promising, but no son William Mayne mentioned and slightly out year wise.  I am going to try and find if anything there is anything about ships crews, mainly from Belfast or Ballywalter.  Tried to contact the church, no joy yet.  Apart from that I'm not sure what else to do.  I have found out his wifes family (Lyall) originates from Caledon Tyrone, her Grandfather was also William and was farmer there, wondering if there were any connections with the Mayne family (friends, neighbours etc.).  Once again thanks.

Marg
