Hello,

After a long and fruitless search I wonder if you can help me in finding the roots of my Great Grandmother,Mary Jane O'Dowd.
She was born c1835 and,(although there is no proof)married William Charles Lambert in Ireland sometime about 1863/4,a child,James, was born about that time.
We commissioned a search of William's Army records but the only mention of wife and family was a sum granted to remove them within England on his discharge from the army.
I have English Census records from 1871-1901 with William and Mary living in Lavant(near Chichester)Sussex on all 4.The birthplaces stated for Mary were as follows,1871-Ireland;1881-Limerick,Ireland;1891-Ireland,Clare and 1901-Dunnogan,Clare,Ireland.(I believe this is the Townland Doonogan in County Clare).
Mary Jane died in the 1st quarterof 1914 in Sussex.I feel that she thought more about her homeland as she grew older and was more specific of her birthplace on the 1901 Census.
She must have been in her late 20's when she met William and,I suppose,it may not have been her 1st marriage or relationship but I hope that some-one may be able to through some light on what, for me,has become a very dark mystery.

Best Wishes,

Janet Kellett,Morriinsville,New Zealand

Hi Marian,
Yes it is William and Mary, their other Son,James(b.c1864 in Ireland)doesn't appear with them on this Census although he didn't marry until 1895.
We have the family on all 4 Census' from 1871 to 1901 living at Lavant,Sussex.

Best wishes,

Jan

Hi Mike,

Thanks for that, your obviously close to the Coalface. If you refer back to my original message you'll see that the 1901 Census was the most specific with Dunnogan,Clare,Ireland being birthplace which we think is the Townland Doonogan.

Best Wishes,

Jan

Ordnance Survey Letters by John O'Donovan and Eugene Curry, 1839

Parish of Kilmurry Ibrickan (c)

In the Townlands of Fennor, Dunogan, Caherush and Knockanalaban in this Parish are the ruins of Castles bearing the names of the Townlands, but I do not find any mention of them in the list of the Castles of Thomond preserved in the College MS., nor of any Castle or place in the Barony of Ibrickan, which is very strange.

Hi Jan,Peter Has got back to me,Ref ODowd, but not found yet

Dear Mike,

Thanks for your two recent e-mails enquiring on behalf of a lady from
New Zealand.

I imagine from the information supplied in your e-mails that your New
Zealand enquirer's great-grandmother came from the townland of Doonogan
in the parish of Kilmurry Ibrickan. Doonogan is quite a large townland,
with a lough (a lake) and a castle, long in ruins.

See this outline map of county Clare showing its various parishes; the
parish of Kilmurry Ibrickan is numbered 40:

See this outline map of the parish of Kilmurry Ibrickan with the
townland of Doonogan numbered 23:

The townland of Doonogan is approx. 10 miles due east from the village

The place name Doonogan derives from the Irish, Dún Ógáin, meaning
Hogan's fortress or Hogan's residence.

Roman Catholic parish records for this parish begin in April 1839. It
might be worth consulting the 1839 Catholic parish register to see if
there are baptismal entries for O'Dowd children. Your enquirer could
write to: Very Rev Pat Larkin, Parish Priest, Church of St Mary,
Mullagh, Co. Clare.

With best wishes,

  - Peter Beirne,
   Clare County Library.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the last 2 messages, will have a close look at them and will write to the Parish priest as suggested, have hope that the contact with the Limerick Diocese will bear fruit and wait hopefully.
We have used the Clare Library Site and found it to be a well thought out and beautifully presented site but, unfortunately, didn't give any further info on Mary Jane.We did send an e.mail to them hoping for contact with some-one with local information but had no reply, understandable really as I expect they're being asked those types of question all of the time.

Thanks and best wishes,

Jan
