Hello Iam trying to find Elizabeth/Lizzie Ryan who according to her Australian marriage certificate was born about 1864 in Abington Limerick. Her parents are listed as Michael and Julia Ryan. I dont know if Julia's maiden name was Ryan or not.?? Lizzie was married in 1887 in Queensland but have not been able to find when she emigrated. I would appreciate any help in trying to find her birth, parents and any siblings she may have had. Thank You Henrietta | |

Hi Henrietta As it happens, civil BMD records in Ireland started in the year 1864. This is the only Elizabeth Ryan birth listed in the IFHF for that year for Co. Limerick: Action Source Surname First Name Year County Civil Birth Ryan Elizabeth 1864 Co. Limerick You can view and print the complete record on the site below, but you would need to pay Eur 5.00. Hi Henrietta Do you know if they were Protestant or Catholic? The church in Abington is the Church of Ireland (Protestant). You can see it here: The nearest R.C. parish seems to be Boher/Moroe. Marian Manager |

Hi there Marian, Thank you for you quick response. Iam helping my sister in this request. She is not able to join your great site as she has Lynx on her computer. Lizzie Ryan was married in Catholic Church in Queensland . It is very strange that that name Julia is down as her mother on her marriage isnt it? Where would you suggest she go from here with the difference in mothers name? I very much appreciate your help Thank you Henrietta |

Hi Henrietta You're very welcome. Now, it sounds from what you say that your sister is not certain about the year of birth of Lizzie Ryan, and therefore that record I found may not necessarily be the correct one, and as yet we have no way of knowing. Lizzie's mother could have been called a) Julia or b) Sarah or c) Julia Sarah or d) Sarah Julia! I think your sister should contact the GRO in Roscommon (address is on this site) giving all the details she has -- but she must stress which facts she is certain are definitely correct. She does need to find out Lizzie's parents for sure before going back another generation. Hope this is of some help at least for the time being. Marian |

Hi Marian, Thank you for all the info. My sister had a look at the birth of Elizabeth Ryan in 1864 but it was not her. Parent were a William and Margaret. If it was a Catholic birth would it be called a Civil birth? Lizzie was married in 1887 and on that certificate she was 23. On the birth of her daughter in 1888 she is listed as 24 was we are taking that info as being reasonably correct. Which would make her birth about 1864. Would the Catholic Church at Abington have an email address do you know.? The birth of Denis Joseph Does not seem to be in either of the two counties we are looking at but it is interesting with the parents names being the same.??? Your help and suggestions are really appreciated Kind Regards Henrietta |

Hi Henrietta Sorry to hear that the civil birth record was the wrong one, but as I said there was some doubt about her exact birth year. If she was 23 in 1887, she could have been born in 1863 or 1864. Also, do bear in mind that people did not always give their true age, so we could be out by a few years! In answer to your question, civil births can be any denomination. So, since Lizzie may have been born before 1864, she may not be listed in the civil birth records at all. In other words her birth may not have been officially registered with the GRO. But there WILL be a parish (church) record of her baptism, it's just a matter of finding the right church. Hopefully it is the Catholic church in Abington, Co. Limerick, but if not it might come under the Boher/Moroe parish which is very close by. There doesn't seem to be an e-mail address for the church in Abington, so you would have to send an airmail letter to the Parish Priest. Many of the priests are quite elderly and they don't use e-mail. It is usual to enclose a small donation to the church, say about Eur 10-20. You say "the birth of Denis Joseph Ryan does not seem to be in either of the two counties we are looking at." Which are the two counties you are looking at? You have only mentioned County Limerick, and that is where Denis was born. Also the fact that his mother is Julia Ryan Ryan looks as though Ryan was her maiden name also, which you had said might be so! Not sure if you knew that Ryan is one of the most common names in Ireland? It is possible that Michael and Julia may have been cousins, or they may not have been related at all before marriage. Let us know how you get on, and if you need any more help. Marian Manager |

Henrietta - This is the address of the Boher/Murroe parish priest's residence. You could send your letter to this address if you prefer, mentioning that your ancestors came from Abington. Murroe and Boher Parish Parochial House, Murroe Limerick IRELAND Marian Manager

Hi Marian, I apologize for my wording in mentioning 2 counties. I should have said 2 parishes in Limerick namely Abington and Boher/Murroe. Looking at the Irish family history site Denis Joseph was not born in either of these two parishes but I guess it is possible the family had moved in the time between Lizzie's birth and that of Denis. As you mentioned Ryan is a very common name in Ireland and that makes it even more difficult. However with your wonderful help we have managed to find openings to investigate which will lead to Lizzie's parents. She may have been born in 1863 as you say and has missed out on being registered with GRO. Will send a letter off to the Parish Priest and hopefully that will give us an answer. Thank you so much for all the help you have given. You and the team are a great help to everyone. Kind Regards Henrietta |
