I am trying to find out where in Ireland my ancestors came from. William West was born in Ireland in 1810. He married Mary about 1834 in Ireland. She was born in 1816. They and their five children came to America in 1846 on the ship Empire from Liverpool, arriving in New York on June 17, 1846. William and Mary's occupation was listed as "weavers" on the ship manifest. They resided in Enfield, Hartford, Connecticut in 1850.
Their children and birth dates were;
Robert W West bn 1837
Margaret West bn 1835
Hannah West bn 1839
John West bn 1842
Isabelle West bn 1844
They had two more children, Andrew and Mercy, born in Connecticut.
Since they were weavers and probably Protestant, I guess that they may have come from what is now Northern Ireland, but I don't know enough to research further.
I would greatly appreciate any assistance provided.
Thanks, Steve Hamblin

Wow, That may be them. The child, Emily Margaret West may be the Margaret West shown on the ship registry. She was the first born of their children.

Mike,
That is a possibility although Hannah's age doesn't match the ship records ( I guess she could have lied about her age) and the census says born in Connecticut while my Hannah was born in Ireland and came over in 1846.
I don't have any other records of that generation. But Robert, one of my ancestors, migrated to Illinois and eventually Kansas. I believe he died around Meridian, KS around 1900. Also, I have Robert's wife's name as Margaret Elizabeth.
Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve,
This is a follow-up to Mike's post in Message 3.
Someone in the family has submitted this family to a LDS Temple in UTAH.
If you have a FHC nearby your home they can help you with locating the film or records that were submitted.
CAUTION: There can be errors in anything found in these records and they need to be checked with primary sources.
I will post in next message the information found in the 1870 and 1880 census records.

Record submitted by a member of the LDS Church. The record often shows the name of the individual and his or her relationship to a descendant, shown as the heir, family representative, or relative. The original records are not indexed, and you may have to look at the film frame-by-frame to find the information you want. A family group record for this couple may be in the Family Group Record Collection; Archive Section. (See the Family History Library Catalog for the film number.) These records are alphabetical by name of the father or husband.

Steve,
1870 Census  Town of Enfield, County of Hartford, Connecticut_P.O. Tompsonville
pg.62 line 3_Dwelling 313

Smith Henry  (Initial hard to read) 33_ stone mason_ bn Mass_ notation in wrong column(19). denied the right to vote because of crime committed_ THIEF (correct column20)

Conroy Bridget   _60_ Ireland_ works in carpet mill
Mc Core(?) Kate_24_Ireland_   same as above
Galvin Honora   _50_ Ireland _    same as above

This  information conflicts with the date of marriage found in the LDS.If  this is the correct couple they were married about 1861-62

1880 Census.
Mike and I both found Margaret West living with the Smith Family in the 1880 census but I never looked at the original census image, just the index on-line.
 This is a very poor quality image;
Suffield ,Hartford County, Connecticut _25 June 1880
Now there is a Henry D. Smith but age is about 10 years off from the prior census 1870

Henry D. Smith _  56_blacksmith_ Mass_ Mass_Mass
Belle Smith        _35_wife_keeping house_ Conn_ Conn_Conn
Harry O. Smith_6_ son _                        _Mass_ Mass_ Mass
Mildred Ida Smith_2_ dau_                    Mass_Mass_Mass

Margaret West_    43_ keeping house    _Conn_Conn_Conn

Did Henry and Belle move to Mass sometime after the 1870 census? The Mass border isn't very far from the County of Hartford.

Why would Belle and Margaret have given Connecticut as the place of birth  for themselves and their parents?

Did someone else give the information to the Census taker? We'll never know, but this is  why  your family often  seems to have fallen off the face of the earth  because of distorted information.

Will try to follow this family forward.

Hi Steve,

Henry L. Smith Family found in the 1870 census with  wife Bridget as  named in 1880 is not  Isabelle West Smith.

I have not found the Henry D. Smith Family as yet in the 1870 Census.

This information isn't correct on the children compared to the 1880 Census

 Hi Steve,

After reviewing the information about  the ROBERT WEST Family that you have  on your web page:

I've determined that the  family  of William and Mary WEST found in the census 1850 ,Enfield, Hartford County, Connecticut are not the

parents of  your ancestor Robert West.

In your Notes you have  Robert W West born 1837 Ireland married Margaret Elizabeth b. Ireland. She died 1860 Kentucky.

If this were the same Robert ..son of William and Mary... he would have only be 13 yrs of age in 1850.

The first child born to Robert and Margaret Elizabeth was:

Mary West daughter of  Your Robert and mother Margaret Elizabeth was born in 1847... Tenn.

I have saved a copy of the following Census Image.

I also have copies of  the 1885 Kansas State census that shows Benjamin F  West and his  brother M .West living in Shawnee_Soldier_ Kansas.

I haven't looked for Robert West only in the 1870 census.

I'll forward  the census to your e-mail.

It appears that your West Family was in America before the arrival of the William West family of Connecticut.

Now, we can take another approach to the families research.
