Hi I need help in finding a Reginald Richard Woodleigh b 1875c in Devonport, England. I believe on his New Zealand Boer War records he record NOK as James Woodley (brother) living at 26 Chapple St Devonport, England. I have no more information about his family. I am not sure where Reginald was born or how he got to New Zealand and why the difference in spelling of his last name and help would be great. Debbs | |

Hi again Debbs Looking at the original census image, Reginald's father Henry was a retired naval officer. It states that he was born in Morrice Town, Devon. His mother Louiza Ann was born in St. Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands. Charlotte was born in Plymouth and the other four children in Lifton, Devon, which is between Tavistock and Launceston. The family is living at Winslade Farm. There is no James living with them. Do you know if he was the eldest in the family, and therefore might have been away? Devonport, which you mention in your message, is in Plymouth. It is a naval dockyard. Marian Manager |

Hi Debbs Well I am trying to track down James. If we can find him and his family we have a better chance of finding Reginald, or whatever he called himself! Now, in the 1901 census there is a James Woodley age 42 living in Devonport with his wife Sarah. He was a First Class Petty Officer in the Royal Navy. Born c1859, so a few years older than his brother. I will keep searching. Marian Manager |

Debbs - I checked out the address 22 Chapel (note spelling) Street, Devonport in 1891, but there was nobody by the name of Woodley living there. The names were Bryant, Smith, Terlizzick, Collier, Cuddeford, White and Jane. Unfortunately there is no street address check for 1901 as yet. On the 1901 census I found James G. Woodley age 47 Bootmaker and his wife Mary A. Woodley, living at 32 George Street, Devonport. He was born in Devonport c1854. Also in 1901 living in 44 Glenmore Avenue, Devonport: James Woodley 42 First Class Petty Officer Royal Navy b Buckfastleigh c1859 Sarah J. Woodley Wife Elizabeth daughter 12 William J. son 10 ??? Ernest G. son 2 Do you think either of these could be yours? If you knew the names of any other siblings of James and Reginald, or indeed any other details at all, please let us know as it would be very helpful. Marian Manager
