Christiana WRIGHT was my 4x great grandmother. She was born in Liverpool in about 1821, I haven't been able to find any record of a baptism for her.
She married Maddock PUGH on 11th August, 1841 in Nantwich, Cheshire. Her father was named as George WRIGHT, umbrella maker, and he seems to be one of the witnesses along with a Margaret WRIGHT whom I'm assuming is possibly her mother or sister.
Although, I have unearthed a lot of info about Christiana after her marriage - she had 11 children and lived until 1906, dying at her daughter's home in Wakefield, West Riding - I know nothing of her or her family before this, so any info would be very much appreciated. |

Hi Kate Firstly, I found Christiana in 1841 as below. You probably have this already. 1841 Census of England Living at Greenwood Square, Barnsley, Yorkshire Maddock Pugh age 30 Christianah Pugh age 20 born (not in Yorkshire) c1817-1821 Richard Wright age 15 - possibly her brother??? Remember that their ages were rounded down to the nearest five years on this census, so they could have been a few years older than stated. Have also made another find, which I will post in the next message. Marian Manager

Hi Kate I think this is young George's birth record. If you were to obtain the certificate it should give his mother's maiden name which will lead you to the parents' marriage record. Marian |

Hi Kate We are of course taking the 1851 census at face value insofar as George is in truth their son, and not their grandson. There is no real way of knowing that for sure without the cert. Marian |

Thank you Marion! I've been trying to find George and Margaret WRIGHT for so long. That certainly does appear to be them in 1851. Looking at their ages, young George would appear to be a grandson, but I'll send off for his birth certificate, even if he is the next generation, there might be some other useful info.
I'd found the 1841 entry for Christiana and her family. Like you, I suspect Richard is her brother. Christiana and Maddock's son Thomas is also there, he would have been a baby of a few months old.
I'm thrilled to see Margaret was from Scarborough - I lived there for 10 years and two of my sons were born there.
Thanks again, I really appreciate your help!

Kate - I did try to find George and Margaret's marriage, but nothing definite showing. There is a Margaret Metcalf and also a Margaret Bosswell who married George Wright, but no way of knowing if either of them is yours. Do those names ring any bells? Marian |

I seem to remember having neighbours called Boswell in Scarborough, but I can't match either surname with anyone in my family today. I did find a Margaret JONES who is another possible. She married a George WRIGHT in Liverpool around the time of Christiana's birth. I think I'll take all 3 names and try to find a matching baptism in Scarborough. If I track each one forward I might be able to eliminate 2 of the Margarets.
It is a thrill to find a connection, even if it is slight. I suppose most people would find that odd, but I think other family historians do get it.
Thank for looking! |
