Bernard - Firstly, I found Henry and Emily in the 1891 census. They have a son Henry age 2, and Ephraim Speight age 9 is listed as a brother. We have to assume he is Emily's little brother. Now here is Henry and Emily's marriage registration: Marriages Dec 1886 Speight Emily Sculcoates 9d 253 Ward Henry George Sculcoates 9d 253 And young Henry's birth. Births Jun 1889 Ward Henry Edwin Sculcoates 9d 170 Here is Ephraim's birth: Births Dec 1880 SPEIGHT Ephraim Bradford, Y. 9b 150 In 1901 they have more children - Emma age 8, Mary E. age 7, William age 3 and Leonard age 1. Here are the registrations: Births Dec 1892 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ward Emma Lilian Sculcoates 9d 183 Births Mar 1894 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ward Mary Ellen M Sculcoates 9d 165 Births Jun 1898 WARD William Sculcoates 9d 216 Births Sep 1899 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ward Leonard John Sculcoates 9d 197 Marian Manager |

Hi Bernard You probably have a map of England, but if not, just letting you know that Sculcoates is part of Hull in Yorkshire today. The full name is Kingston-upon-Hull. Marian Manager |

Hi Bernard Many thanks for sending the marriage cert. I agree with you that it certainly looks like Henry's father was Edmund. And I was pleased to note that he was a bachelor, because I had wondered if he might have been married before. It seems not. I also notice that he was a Blacksmith. And that there were nine years between himself and Emily - at least that is what it says! All these little clues can help. I will continue the search for Edmund and post any more findings on here for you. Marian |

Hello Bernard The closest I have been able to find is on the 1861 census where Edward and Maria Ward are living in Nassington, Northamptonshire. Nassington is a small country village just outside Peterborough. Edward is an Agricultural Labourer. The children listed are Edward 15, Harriet 14, Thomas 11, George 10, William 8, Elizabeth 7, Fanny 6, Frederick 3 and Maria 7 months. I am wondering if Henry George was known by his middle name. Also living at the same address is another Ward family, most likely related. They are John Ward who is a widower age 57 and his occupation is also Agricultural Labourer, and his children are Annie 21, Thomas 17 and Charles 15. I think this must be Edward and Maria's marriage. Oundle is in Peterborough. Marriages Dec 1843 Sharp Maria Oundle 15 651 Ward Edward Oundle 15 651 Let me know what you feel, when you have had time to digest all this. Marian

Hi Marian Well I superimposed two other M's and N's over the name on the Marriage Certificate of Henry George Ward and its obvious that its Edmund. So that clears that up...for my peace of mind anyway. Even if it comes to dead end I am sure of that.... Byeeee. Bernard |
