Nachzehrer: When in its grave, this Vampire would hold the thumb of one hand with the other, its left eye would be open, and it emited a grunting sound as it chewed on its shroud in the tomb.

Neuntöter: A Vampire which spreads plague.

Nelapsi: Slovak. This Vampire is able to massacre entire villages in a single visit, possessing the ability to kill with a single glance.

Nora: Known mainly in Hungary, it is a small bald humanoid that moves on all fours and is supposedly invisible. He attacked its victoms by jumping on them and sucking on their breasts.

Nosferatu: A Romanian word meaning Undead.

Nosferatu exemplify the disease aspect of the vampire legend, the carrier and slave. Carriers live longer, moving from area to area, spreading the disease to slaves. The disease is passed by a carrier, draining the blood from a victim. After a short period of time, the corpse will revive with a massive desire for blood. Each victim of a slave in turn becomes a slave on death. This kind of epidemic can spread very rapidly as carriers are created at random. One slave in a hundred will become a carrier if it lives long enough.

Carriers generally live a long time and gradually become less human. They become of the ratty, pale and clawed variety, often betraying the effects of disease. Slaves often don't live long enough to develop the same signs of their nature, but will end up that way if they do survive. Carriers remain about as intelligent as they were in life whereas slaves have notably less intellect. Those destined to become carriers slowly regain their minds over the course of a few days.

Nosferatu can be killed by fire. Sunlight irritates their eyes, and slaves find that they burn in strong light, so they only move at night. Carriers are not too good at blending in with society, so it is easier at night. Lasers or plasma weapons work just as well as fire, though the flamethrower is often the chosen weapon for facing these beasts.

Strigoiu: A Vampire that lives in abandoned houses.

Strigoi: Another Romanian name for Vampire applied to the returning dead.

Spirit Vampires: They spread like Nosferatu but seem to spring up spontaneously and are not easy be rid of. Spirit Vampires are created when a psychopathic type dies with enough willpower to stay in the mortal world. The creature forms following burial, solidifying out of psychic energy after nightfall. It looks exactly like the human who formed it, and as long as the human's body remains intact, the vampire will continue to pray on the local populace. Each victim who dies also becomes a vampire, and the contagion spreads.

The creature is responsible for maintaining the body by drinking the blood of living humans and returning with the extracted energy before morning. With the sunrise, the creature evaporates and loses the accumulated life energy. If the body fails to get enough energy for more than a week, it rapidly becomesnothing. The creature itself can be scared off inflicting damage or the oncoming dawn, but it doesn't really exist so it ca not be killed. The only way to stop a Spirit Vampire is to stake the body and then toast it. Killing the original vampire will lay all of them to rest, but killing any others just stops that one.

The male version of a Succubus is an Incubus.

The Cainites try to attone for the sins of vampires by avoiding human victims and destroying 'evil' vampires. This makes them the mortal enemies of the Lilim, but they mostly try to stay hidden. A specific sect within the Cainites deals with taking out Lilim groups. They are called in by other members when a group is discovered. The Cainites are one of the main groups responsible for keeping Lilim and Nosferatu under control.

Ubour: Bulgarian. This Vampire is created when a person dies violently or the spirit refuses to leave the body. The corpse is buried and remains so for forty days, at which time it will rise and cause mischief. It will not generally drink blood until its other sources of nourishment are gone, which includes the consumption of regular food, thus the attacking of humans rarely occurs. It is also said that when the Ubour moves around, sparks are created.

Upior: Polish name for Vampire.

Upír: This vampire was thought to have had two souls: a vampire was a corpse animated by one of the souls, the lesser soul, that remained in the body after death. If any of these creatures escape then the Upierczi's spirit will escape too and return later for revenge.

Upirina: See Vrykolakas.

Ustrel: A Bulgarian vampire whose birth had been on a Saturday but died before its baptism. On the ninth day of its burial, it is believed to rise from the grave and attack local sheep and cattle, draining their blood. If an Ustrel was attacking a community's livestock, one could hire a vampirdzhija, or vampire hunter. This person had an ability to see the Ustrels, and could tell if there was an Ustrel in the community.

Utukku: Babylonian. This Vampire spirit, sometimes seen as a demon, is belived to be the spirit of a recently deceased person that has returned from the grave for some unknown reason.

Vampire: An animated corpse that drinks blood in order to sustain itself.
OR
A human, creature, spirit or other entity that drains anything-- blood, energy, etc.-- from humans or animals to sustain its way of life.

Vampirism: The act of taking fluid or energy from another person.

Vampir: Hungarian name for Vampire.

These are the more classical Gothic vampires, and probably the most human of the supernatural beings. Vampyr follow sex-and-death vampirism, they seduce their victims before killing them.

Vampyr are formed by ingesting the blood of another vampyr, this brings on a progressive degeneration of the vampyr-to-be. The degeneration appears to be a virulent disease, with affects similar to severe anemia. After a relatively short period, the 'victim' will appear to die and return to life on the next nightfall. Thus, the new vampyr is born.

Generally, the requirement for human blood turns the new vampyr to a life that most people describe as evil. Lone vampyr tend to end up being killed within a month or so. There are a couple of groups of vampyr who can generally keep their members alive for a longer time: the Lilim (Children of Lilith) and the Children of Cain.

Vampyr can be killed by fire, exposure to sunlight or decapitation. A stake through the heart immobilises them, but does not kill them. Starving of blood will reduce them to a corpse, but this corpse can reanimate if supplied with blood.

Vampiress: A female vampire.

Vampire Demi-god: Entities who are neither demon nor spirit. Demi-gods, or lesser gods, are often god hybrids or low ranking gods who traditionally do not interact with the mortal population, unless it is in legend. A vampire demi-god is a figure in mythology which acts in a manner consistent with folkloric vampires. These lesser gods are, I believe, the beginnings of the vampire, who eventually de-evolved from a god- splitting then, perhaps, into the other related forms of spirits and demons- to a very tangible, and formally mortal, corpse.

Vampire Society: Most solitary vampires, at least the supernatural ones, will end up dead. Since this happens, vampires tend to form groups for support. There are various small groups in every town, but there are two important groups: The Children of Cain and The Lilim.

Varacolaci: Romanian. This vampire that ranks among the most powerfull of all the undead, as possesses the ability to cause both lunar and solar eclipses. The Varacolaci may appear as pale humans with dry skin, and they can travel on an astral thread, the midnight spinning, travelling as far as need as long as the thread remains unbroken.

Vetala: Hindu vampires whose hands and feet are turned backward which reanimate the dead.

Volkodlak: Slovenian. The Volkolak is linked in some ways to various werewolf legends.

Vourdalak: Russian. In Russian folklore, this Vampire is considered to be a beautiful but evil woman.

Vrykolakas: This Greek name is interchangeable with Lampir(Bosnian), Vurvulak(Albanian), Upirina(Serbo-Croatian), and Vukodlak(Croatian). It is an evil being amongst the Southern Slavs that attacked people at night. It is said that there was one for every Slavic clan.

Vrykolatios: A vampire species found on the island of Santorini. They are described as fiends which banquet on the living.

Vukodlak: A Slavic Vampire-Werewolf which rises from its grave to drink blood and have sex with its former spouse.

Vurvulak: See Vrykolakas.

Vyrkolakas: Greek name for Vampire.
