Is the money that comes inot the house his and yours, or is it all pooled together to become "ours"?  Devi brought up an interesting idea for discussion here, because I was wondering how finances work in other homes.  Ours is rather unique, as I have no money coming in on my own.  We don't get child tax benefit, or GST, and I got long tired of "asking" for money like a kid his allowance.
So, when James gets paid Money for the car and house, and an extra bit for utilities and food gets put in the bank, all the rest is split down the middle and put in our separate accounts for our use.  It works great, as I have and use one credit card, james another, and we never have to worry about what the other one is spending.

So how do you all work it out?

I have 4 accounts....  My main current account gets my wages into it and a monthly direct debit from Gary goes in too... I pay all my bills from this account. My next account gets the childrens allowance into it and I let that run up and pay for shoes, holidays and christmas etc out of that. The next is a 30 day notice account and I put money into that knowing I won't need it in a hurry and my forth account is with a credit union. I opened that when we first started saving for our house and got many a loan out of it I can tell you...  I have some savings in that too and I can get at that instantly....

Then I have my credit card...

The money that comes in this house is claimed by "it" and goes towards paying bills, buying food whatever is needed - i only bring in child benefit and that goes towards the same. I however control where it goes and what is paid and when cos it goes into my account and this is where bills are paid from.

We have seperate accounts and Jerry pays a sum into my account each month by direct debit.  He pays all the bills, mortgage etc, so the money I get is for clothes, food etc.  My wages are mine too.

That we we never question what the other spends and the money he gives me I consider mine to spend as I wish.

Well.. as I said in a previous post... we have only one account and every penny we get goes into it.  We pay all our bills and loans out of that account.  All the money is OUR money.

When we moved in together we each had our own personal account.  I didn't have a job at the time because I had gotten pregnant after leaving my job to move in with hubby.  The only money deposited in my account was the child tax benefit and that was mine.

When I started working again we opened up a joint account and kept our respective personnal accounts.  We sat down and calculated all our payments.  We also determined how much percent of the family income we brought in.  With that we decided that hubby would deposit 60% of all monthly payments and me 40% into our joint account.  This account was used only for payments.  Any personnal expenses we had we paid for ourselves.

That worked fine for a while but then we just got tired of calculating all the time so hubby brought up the idea of just sticking all the money in the same account and that we could just use what we need.

At first I was against the idea because I didn't want to feel asif everything I purchased would be questionned but he promised me that wouldn't be the case.  So I decided to try it out and now 4 years later that is still the way we work.

I have to say it works out great this way.  We never argue about who spends what.  The only thing that comes up once in a while is when we buy something major (like and oven! lol) we have to both agree on what price we will pay.  I usually end up winning though! lol!

Lately I have gotten a credit card and that account is in my name only because hubby doesn't have a good credit rating (because of his foolish behavoir in his youth... before ever meeting me of course.).  Our new car loan is also in my name for the same reason but it's all paid from the same account so it's still "ours".

What an interesting disscussion though Bratz!

And Ghaens... how do you ever manage four accounts???  I have a head-ache just thinking about it! lol!

Devi xx

We have our own separate accounts, each done entirely different.
Hubby has his current bank account.
Hubby has his own savings account (which he's forgot about)
I have a current bank account.
Also a  savings account.
When the children were little, he was the only money earner, so he paid for everything - food and bills and also his drink.
I stayed at home, looked after the children and did everything in the house and garden (quite multi-talented now, can lay carpets, build fences, concreting, decorating).
When the children got older, I got a part-time job (30 hrs a week).
That sort of evened things up a bit.
He pays for the main bills, mortgage, pension out of his current account.
The utilities bills are paid by my hubby, but through my current account (he gives me the money each month).
The food (not including ciggies/dirnk for hubby) and any other general things are paid by me "general things = carpets, tv, fridge, oven, bed, well anything that's needed new in the house, I buy).
Hubby has now taken to cooking and during the week, he does now make his own meals and he's also taken over most of the garden work now - but I do the plants bit.
Hubby does the ordering on-line ('cos he has a credit card), so he's bought me a few music CD's lately, well he hasn't asked me for the money yet, lol.
I've paid for our sons brace - which will be about £1300'ish in the end.
Daugher has said that she wants to get married, she already lives with her boyfriend - that's another story.

Well as you asked.............
Hubby and i have always had seperate bank accounts. I pay the morgage and but the food and clothes etc........
He pays the other bills like ......electric , council tax, water,tv,phone.
It has worked really well that way and gives us some degree of independance with our money.
Now i am the major earner i have a standing order to his account for 500 a month towards the bills he pays.

We have always had a joint account as I was working when we first got married.
When they kids were born we kept the joint account but of course Mark earns all the money that goes into it.
I have money on tuesdays which is mine to go for coffee with and get any bits I need. I also have money on thursdays for the veggies and bits I buy up the market once a week.
Mark pays all the bills, mortgages etc and does the weekly shopping, and bits in between.
I only earn 50 pounds a month and out of that I top up my phone and get what ever I need that month, thats my own money in one sense but I do use it for family things or things for the house etc. At the moment I am saving to take Mark away for his birthday this year and also for a 40th party next year, so my wages are all accounted for for quite a while.
The other money I take total charge of is the child benefit, which I organise on a spreadsheet, and this pays for all the kids shoes, clothes, most of their school trips, photos, and anything they need. I am also buying furniture and flooring for their rooms at the moment with some of it. I have always managed this money really efficiantly.
This has always worked really well for us as we both have access to the joint account but also have our own responsibilitys money wise too.

We have a joint account which most of the money goes into, if Marks gets paid by cheque it goes in there, all the WFTC and CTC goes in there, all the major bills come out from there by DD, I also have a personal account and if he gets paid in cash (which isn't very often! ) it goes into there, then I transfer money as needed!, we also have an account in Kessandra's name which is used for all the bits of change which we save up, and I take money from there in an emergency, I also have a Post Office card account for my Child benefit and all I take from that is £30 a week to pay off a loan, the rest is saved until it's really needed, like with Kessie's account!.

Simple........ whats his is OURS.........

and whats mine is me own

Well ok then - we had a joint account before I went back to college to do my degree and teacher training, which both our money went into, and the money was spent by either of us as necessary.  Then when I went to uni I opened a student account for the free overdraft etc.  Then when I graduated I was able to keep some free overdraft for 3 years..... so I just kept it on with my money being paid into it.
The way it works now is that the mortgage is on a direct debit from the joint account and then all the other direct debits come off of my account.  The food shopping depends which one of us does it.  If he goes it comes off the joint account and if I go.........

it still comes off the joint account  but don't tell him lol

It works for us, and since I started working full time we are finally getting to the point where we have some money left at the end of the month, instead of having month left at the end of the money!
