Hi All, sorry haven't been around, crazy with the Hlidays, and then my job 'fired' me while on disability, because I'm out, so trying to see if I can fight this in any way. Been very depressed. Also, now new doc (Whom I like), says may not be rsd cause I got it from minor injury, but usually tht]as how it happens from what ive read? Well, see new neuro today, they want to do emg test. Im wondering if this is gonna hurt like hell or what? Dont they stick the needles where it hurts?? Welp, hope all is well with everyone and you're having good Holidays. Gentle hugs, Dawna

it depends on pain tolerance.I have bad nerve damage so when they did it for me it did hurt  alotbut without nerve damage I don't think it will be as bad.I was able to toreraate it though it was though take pain meds before if they let you it helps and bring music or a friend
sorry I haven't been checking in battling exam week.My body has now decide to cause such bad back issues that I want to just never move and it is stressful since it isnt rsd and no one knows what wrong how I have 5 pain sites and I'm running out of energy to fight

I have been given 6 emg's. They hurt me to the point of screaming and crying and the last one, I had to physically held down, and the other people I know with RSD have said simular.

EMG's are not used to diagnose RSD as it is a small nerve fiber injury, but it can rule out other conditions.  You would need to try a small nerve biopsy to get an RSD diagnosis, and then again, it does not always show up, so if it doesn't then it does not mean you dont have it, but if it does then you do... you can also do a thermogram or ganglion nerve block... RSD is a collection of symptoms, but the symptoms wax and wane so it is sometimes hard to be properly diagnosed, unless your having a flair up at the time the doctor is examining you or it shows up on a test that is for RSD.  But as I said before, just cause it does not show up at that moment, does not rule it out.  Many doctors miss that info...

If you are in the phoenix area we are having a seminar this Thursday at Resort Suites in Scottsdale and an RSD expert (Dr. Grove, AZ Ctr for Pain Relief) will be there to answer questions.  It is from 9:30 to Noon.  Please call if you have any questions.

It is a busy time of the year and I hardly have time to read the posts let alone write one myself!  My son is going to a new aquatherpay place and yesterday the therapist asked him to do an exercise that hurt him so much he was unable to do the rest of the exercises and still hurts today.  So, we have another therapist to educate.  It gets tiring.  They mean well but haven't a clue.  Linda

Hi Countrydiva,
I also have had more EMG's than I want to remember, they are not comfortable but for me not to the point of screaming....for me it was a surprising short shock. Since haveing RSD I have only had two and I demanded mild office sedation and because of RSD they cannot turn you done as this type of testing is really not recomended with RSD patients. There is information about this in www.rsds.org  They state what I just wrote you about not supposed to do this with RSD, it isnt going to show a damn thing concerning RSD...just nerve entrapment! I specifically didnt like the test where the dr puts electrodes on the finger tips, thats surprising but tolerable.

Hi there,

I'm new to the group...I'm not exactly sure how I got RSD, perhaps giving birth to my daughters each time?  That's when the pain appeared and got worse each time.  Only percocet has helped and I try not to exceed more than 3 a week.  Lyrica was awful; I completely lost my short term memory....now I have taken up gardening to forget about my pain and the rest of the world, since I'm feeling down.  Once my hand pain appears, I do a sloppy finish in gardening and debate whether a percocet is needed.

What kind of treatments have or haven't helped you?

Hi Dawna,
If you havent beeen difinitly diagnosed has a ganglion stellate block been done to see if it stopped the pain...if it does for a few hours it is mmost likly sympathetic maintained pain, another test would be a thermogram..a completely painless picture specifically looking for hot spots,a good test for RSD and lastly the necular bone scan to see if there is any marked bone loss as RSD does this damamge almost right away. Ask about these tests! Google them and you will understand more!

The neuro said we'll try it, it could be bad, and if it's too much, thats fine, we'll stop. They said bring my pain pills with me, but if I already take them it may effect test. My new pain mgmt had found 2 slioghtly bulging disks in neck and they want to ck thats not the prob. He ordered it. The neuro said (Thank God one doc believes me) that it's definitely looking like rsd, not the disc problem, based on my exam. My pain has been pretty well managed lately, so I'm hoping it goes ok. How r things going with you?? are you having to do chemo and all that crap? I hope things are going ok, been worried about you. Take Care.... Dawn

Hi Dawn,
Im positive when I tell you that an EMG will not be affected by pain killers or sedation...its lind of like checking continuity of a wire. A small electrical signal is sent thru the nerve on one end and measure how long it takes to get to the other end..how much resistance to the electrial flow there is. I have had 7 nerve surgeries on both arms from 1992 to 2000 and each time there was 2 emg tests per surgery, when the RSD started I had a dumb assed w/c DR that didnt know what he was looking at but he knew how to work the EMG machine(he was not board certified on that peticular equipment) He did 4 EMG test trying to find the cuase of the RSD. I finally blew up at him and demanded to se a neuroligist, one that I knew personally and did all the testing before and after all the surgeries. By the time I finally seen him the burn had been on for 2 1/2 years and when I went to see the neuroligist and told him what was going on the first thing out of his mouth was "I think you might have RSD" and he ordered the three tests I told you about and he then said the EMG test arent going to shaw anything unless there is a trapped or impenged nerve, he shcooled me on that kind of testing pretty good. As I am an electronics tech I completely understood what was going on with the EMG. A nerve with RSD will show good conduction and still cause the burning as long as there is not entrapment.
As far as me, I am going to loose my right kidney and the attached adrenal gland...this is scheduled for Feburary, the cancer has spred from the adrenal to the kidney, on the left adrenal gland there is a very small mass that is going to get blasted with radiation and some chemo, I feel positive that should be the end of things...we'll see. So for me next year is gonna be another tough one but I am going thu it with God and if things go badly I will just go home with god :)....no worries as either way I will be in a better situation or place!

Hi Marisol,
I noticed you said your pregnancy made things worse. I have a 5 month old so I understand. I thought I was the only one crazy enough to get pregnant with RSD. Well, from what I have been told our crazy prego hormones make things worse. I was doing pretty good with accupunture then I got pregnant and ugh! I am back to square one. you also asked about which therapy has help, accupunture for me. I found a new one that does something with a local anesthetic thing with the it. He is supposed to work wonders,. I will keep everyone posted if things go well.
Peace, Jama

fyi, i had emg friday, wasn't too bad. my sensitive spots are on tops of arms and hands, and she didnt have to put needles there, wasnt fun, but ok. They wanted to do this to rule out pinched nerve in spine C6 & C7, and she said all the nerves looked fine, so neuro saying it is rsd, which is good for me to have more evidence-even though me and other doc know damn well what it is, good to have proof. Other news, was on st disability, work just 'let me go' , so now I'm applying for SS disability, as im pretty much as gooad as it gona get, prob get worse over time, right? seems how it seems to go, as long as i dont do anyhting, i have no pain. sorry so messy, hands hurt today.... been appplying for ss online, can only do pc for 30-6- min before pain starts, lucky you can do a little at a rtime. hope all is well .......D
