i'm ok being a hairdresser  working in a salon ..All though i have own 2 salons in my life time ..i rather not own.. so i guess the question is..  is it your dream to own a salon of your own or are you ok being a worker?   With the high commission up in the area of 60% do you realy need to own? Been there ..

Clients ask me all the time if I'm planning to open a salon, because I have a large clientel, (or it seems to them). I tell them I'm not, and they're suprised because one would think it has to be the next step in your career. When you consider the price of living these days, overhead, land rent, etc., I would probably end up keeping what I would be making with 60%. The only upside I see to owning is the independance and freedom, but there are other options like booth renting. I can honestly say I'm ok with not owning. I like the "freedom" of being able to come and go as I please, with no contracts or commitments. Most of all, I'm very happy to be able to focus on what I love to do.

I worked for someone else for almost 10 years at minimun wage. I was okay with this because it was close to home and my kids were young and it just worked for my family. My family always comes first.

She went crazy and treated me like crap. Finally she was worked into a rage...that i put her in and she fired me after i suggested it. She is a very stupid woman. She ended up closing down after a couple of months.

I have my own salon in my home. There is very little over head. I dont have the headaches of wondering what my crack head boss thinks. Is she going to be in a good mood or not..etc.

I never intended on being my own boss but im glad it happened the way it did. Will i expand and hire others...heck NO!!!!! I like it the way it is. In my experience there is too much jealousy in this business. The other stylist doesnt want you to improve or get ahead.

I own a one person salon. I opened it after I got a bit burnt out of owners who were bad business people. I rent a small space, put in a sink and everything I need and its all mine. I don't have to deal with owners and other stylists' DRAMA. I make all my decisions. Charge what I want. Keep all my money. My rent is very low, lower than a chair was in my neighborhood. I had to put out some money initially but it was worth it. My clients LOVE the privacy. I offer chocolate and refreshments. I have a satellite radio so they get to choose what they want to hear of over 200 music stations. I got to paint and decorate any way I wanted. No one steals my color in the back room and no one but me leaves a mess. Its *wonderful*!
