Voting machines could bring Election Day glitches

(CNN) -- Eight years after Florida's hanging chads exasperated voters and helped usher in sweeping changes in voting technology, many election observers remain concerned about the accuracy of the electronic voting systems most Americans will use November 4.

Touch-screen machines can occasionally fail or register votes for unintended candidates. Optical-scan systems can have trouble reading paper ballots that are too long or marked with the wrong ink. At least one study suggests that electronic voting machines can be easily hacked.

And some 9 million voters, including many in the battleground states of Ohio and Florida, will use equipment that has changed since March, increasing concerns about errors next Tuesday.

"You can be almost certain that there will be irregularities in some places around the country," said Rep. Rush Holt, D-New Jersey. "The problem now is that roughly a third of voters nationwide will use unverifiable electronic machines. So if there are uncertainties, there will be no way to resolve them."

With early voting under way in 31 states, these problems have already surfaced. In recent weeks, voters in West Virginia, Colorado, Tennessee and Texas have reported that touch-screen machines registered their votes, at least initially, for the wrong candidate or party.

{Almost 40 years ago we put two men on the moon for the first time and yet we can't master the technology to go to the polls and vote? What the hell is going on? If we end up with another close election those machines will be the bain of democracy in this country. It's not rocket science! Why don't we just go back to using a pencil and a piece of paper and get on with it?}

The only reason why liberals will complain about the voting machines is if McCain is elected. If Obama wins they won't even think about them.

the fake news media has to start building a case of voter fraud and "errors" to make it look like their polls wern't fabricated lies for the last year.

They're just "priming the pump".  When Obama loses there will be a flood of lawsuits that will make 2000 look like a picnic.

the republicans own those voting machines.  if the dems want to start winning elections,  they should buy diebold.  then would republicans trust those voting machines?

up here in the NE, we have this wonderful invention called the 'magic marker' ...

you hold it between your thumb, index and middle fingers and make a mark with the end of it in the box next to your choice of candidate on a paper ballot ...

order now while supplies last ...

#9  you call stupid,  maybe so.  but i didn't vote for bush and i didn't fall for that WMD scam that he pulled.

you didn't know the suits at diebold favor the republicans?!  they were overheard saying the fix was in for the 2004 ohio election.  so you saying that you don't care about honest elections.  i stopped voting after 2000.  elections are rigged.  if we want real change,  the ballot box won't work.

amendment to #9 ...

we also have electronic voting machines here ... for the physically and mentally challenged who cant operate a marker ... so diebold can only steal the votes of the physically challenged ... the mentally challenged are already in the mccain camp ...

Diebold is th eonly company that makes electronic voting machines, or the software for them, in the country?

I don't think the rigged electronic voting machines, or the "confusing" ballots, or the hanging chad, is the problem.  I think most of the problem lies with incompetent election officials.

diebold also makes those ATM machines.  but the banks are extremely carefully about protecting the software running them.  diebold doesn't get to verify their own programing.  all those voting machines of all types are as important as ATMs.  those who built them shouldn't verify the software that runs them.  just good common sense to have independent verifation of everything.

driver,

do you expect defense lawyers to say "woah.. hold on there" when the jury finds the defendant not guilty?

why would democrats look into voter fraud if they win the election? that's the job of people who lose. think about it.

Did you know the Romans gave up on voting because of voter fraud? This is something they all need to look into.

there is a time for ensuring the fairness of elections.

before an election is a great time. while the votes are being cast is a great time. after the election, if you lose the election, is a great time.

after the election, if you win the election is a less than ideal time to call for a recount.

notice how Bush didn't call for a recount in florida in 2000? that's cause he won the state.

james,  i have been thinking about that.  why are there so many elections?  two years of on the job training.  which means just a congress person or other politician is learning how to do the job,  they can be replaced by by someone without any experience.  and they is the need to go begging for funds to get reelected.  senator dayton from my state isn't going to seek reelection because of the need to go beging for funds to get reelected.  that is the type i could vote.  he doesn't interested in milking the system for all he could get from it.

why not set the term for congressperson to four years.  and at the midpoint,  have a vote of confidence by party members and voters.  there would have to be at least 55% of negative votes to dethrone an officeholder.  if a politician loses the confidence vote,  then have an election.  six months should be enough time for all that campaigning.
