Ian ---

Apropos the Red Eye query ....... is there no way it can be automated by the photo graphics software ?

I've tried the manual methods, including those within the program, and am unimpressed with the results

SOME photo manipulation software has REDEYE REDUCTION features built in but I can't comment on your software as I don't know what you use. It's normally better to use a MAGIC WAND tool if you have one and zoom right in to the eye, and select the REDDEST pxels and turn them BLACK and the pailer red pixels to GREY and not just paint the eye black as this can look worse than the redeye was to begin with

The above picture on the left shows a large amount of REDEYE caused by me being too close to the little girl (Hannah) and my flash being too close to my lens on my camera.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

This was painted out using Photoshop 6 but can be done just as easily in any paint program and there may even be an automatic way of removing the red eye but I prefer to have control over what will happen.

The first thing to do is to zoom right in on the offending red eyes so that you can see what you’re doing and then select the airbrush with a SOFT-EDGED brush from the menu and change it’s size to cover the red area being careful not to overlap onto the eyelid.

Next select BLACK as the colour and with the red area covered press the LMB briefly to cover the red area with the black paint and as long as you haven’t overlapped the eyelid then move to the other eye and repeat the process

That’s the red area dealt with BUT the eyes will look lifeless and need to be brought back to life. Change the colour to GREY and make the brush about 2/3 smaller, move to the middle of the black area and spray the grey paint again. It should look something like a BLACK/GREY fried egg but zoom out to look at to make sure that you’re happy before repeating the process for the other eye.

Finally change the brush colour to WHITE and make the brush size small enough to add a catch light and bring the eyes back to life once again. Thee size of the brush will depend on personal taste so you’ll need to experiment with this but smaller is usually better and more lifelike.

That's an impressive result Ian ..... and an understandable explanation ... thank you - am almost ready to have a go myself lol.

It's the catchlight I was missing too ...... made my subject look like a great white shark !!! Come to think of it ..... that was true before the edit lololol !
