The raft race is a 4 1/2 mile race on homemade rafts across the bay into the harbour. Teams may be single sexed or mixed and must be at least 2 people. Teams that have posted fast times the previous year are started 15 minutes behind the rest, which makes for in interesting life. The race normally starts just as the tide is turning so you can't be too slow otherwise you'll likely get caught on a fst running ebb; however with 3 lifeboats out and other craft there's always plenty of helpif anyone gets in trouble. This year over 30 teams took part in the race, the teams coming from allover the country not just this local area.
All proceeds & collections are split between the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and MENCAP (an organisation that helps handicapped kids).
With bars open,BBQ's, music and a truly stunning firework display over the harbour at night it is a fantastic day out with a good carnival atmosphere.
The race this year was held in late August, my niece & family came to stay with us for a few days, the kids certainly had a great time, particularly being allowed to stay up late to go and watch the fireworks.
