Several Tarot Spreads[credits]

by Anja Heij

Classic 3-Card Spread

This classical three-cards-spread can briefly point out the development of issues.

1. The present situation, also representing the questioner.
2. Circumstances in the past that led to the present situation.
3. Future development.

The Cross

The cross can help to find your direction in crises or complex situations.

1. This is what it is all about, the core of the issue.
2. This is not important now, you should not do this.
3. This is very important now, this you should do.
4. It will lead to this.

The Star

The star is a good spread if you wish to receive more clarity and insight in a problem.

1. The nature of the problem.
2. What influences the matter in a positive way.
3. What influences the matter in a negative way.
4. The past.
5. The present.
6. The future.
7. Final judgment

The Gypsie Spread

The magical spread of the gypsie can be used to get an overview of the present situation of a person.

1. This is the person in the present situation and mood.
2. This is the impression you make in the outside world.
3. This is what you hide behind that appearance (consciously or unconsciously).
4. This is what you want to do, your actions.
5. This is how you feel and what you will reach.
6. What comes afterwards, the future.
7. This is what that will mean to you.

The Celtic Cross

The Celtic cross is the most famous spread. You can use it in most situations. I give you an extensive version of the Celtic cross.

First lay out these eleven cards.

1. This represents what it is really about, what you feel deep inside.
2. This covers the heart or intensifies the matter.
3. This crosses your path.
4. The past (in relation to the question).
5. That which supports you or you lean on.
6. How you think about the issue.
7. What you will get.
8. Personal problem, your point of view of it.
9. The point of view of those around you.
10. Your hopes and fears.
11. Outcome, the future

After that turn over the pile with the left cards, take of the first five cards and lay them out from the right to the left.

Now these five cards tell - from the right to the left - the story of how things will develop themselves.

15 Card Spread

The fifteen-cards-spread is very helpful in pointing out trends, psychological and karmic influences and future developments. Try it! This spread makes more use of the relationships of the cards to one another, so a card may be well- or ill-dignified depending on the influence of the card to the left or right of it.

1. Represents the questioner or the issue.
2. Circumstances surrounding the situation.
3. Personality of the questioner.
6- 10 - 14. Indicate the psychological basis of the issue; they can assist in deciding what may be necessary.
7- 11 - 15. Show forces behind one's control, destiny or karma.
13 - 9 - 5. And 4 - 8 - 12. Show possibilities for the future. If the left and right upper cards complement each other, you can look at them as one development. If the left and right upper cards are in conflict, then the right upper cards show the future if the questioner does not change his present attitude, and the left upper cards point out a possible future if the person does change his direction.

You can buy books with hundred or more spreads. The real art of reading the Tarot however lies not in mastering as many lay-outs as you can find, nor in quoting all card-meanings from memory. What really matters is an open-minded, respectful and intuitive attitude towards the wonders of life in all its variety, what enables you to receive valuable information and insight. Enjoy your journey of self-discovery and have fun with the cards!

The Social Navigator Tarot Spread[credits]

by Cheryl Lynne Bradley

or "Who are these people and what do they want from me?"

As a long time reader with an overly demanding practice, one area related to my gifts has become a constant source of confusion, disappointment, exploitation and betrayal for me. What I have come to discover, and it is greatly saddening, is that, no matter how kind and giving I am with my friendship or my heart, all they want is the psychic.

Reality punches you in the face when someone tells you that they wouldn't want anyone to know they associated with or counted on you for advice. The reason being that "I love you dearly but if other people knew I was associated with someone like you, people just wouldn't take me seriously." "I love you dearly" is never followed by "but". These situations will always blindside you - they just come up and out of nowhere.

When people in our daily life ask us a question, they are not always looking for our opinion. They want, or think they are getting, a prediction all of the time. You need to clarify with people " Are you asking my opinion or do you want a reading?" if they ask you what the difference is, just say "About $100." End of conversation. Another very quick way to tell is to just start talking about what is going on in your life - a phone conversation will quickly come to an end and your house guest, after attempting to return to conversation back to their situation, will suddenly remember "Oh my, I forgot I had to...." or "Oh my is it that time already...". Always remember that when you do something for nothing, very often that is what is thought of it.

This is why I have developed the the Social Navigator Layout or Who are these people and what do they want from me? It will help in weeding out these "psychic vampire sponges with quills" that misuse our gifts, try to internalize our strength, wisdom and health, abuse our spirits so thoughtlessly and waste our hard earned spiritual currency. I think this would also be a very effective reading for clients who are experiencing a lot of issues around work or family or who are contemplating a career change.

This is a twelve card reading. Each card has a specific question that will help us ascertain how to adapt to navigate our social landscape able to avoid, if not eliminate the blindsides. Forewarned is forarmed.

You do not require the whole Tarot deck for this reading. Separate all of the Court Cards and Major Arcana from the deck, set the Minor Arcana aside as you will not need them. Please feel free to use the whole deck if you feel like you want a deeper enhancement.

The twelve cards are broken down into a quadruplicity - three groups of four questions each. The first four questions relate to friendships, families, work and personal relationships, the second four deal with the foundation, social status and potential of long term relationships, both personal and work, and the last four deal with work and business relationships as well as the financial aspects of personal relationships.

Shuffle and cut the cards using your usual method and deal them out as follows:

1.Whom can I trust?2.Who might do me harm?3.Who can I go to for advice?4.Whom can I depend on when in need?

1. Whom can I trust?
2. Who might do me harm?
3. Who can I go to for advice?
4. Whom can I depend on when in need?

5.With whom should I mate?6.Who will be co-operative and reciprocal?7.Who is high or low in the social heirarchy?8.Who is likely to succeed in the future?

5. With whom should I mate?
6. Who will be co-operative and reciprocal?
7. Who is high or low in the social hierarchy?
8. Who is likely to succeed in the future?

9.Who will be a good member of my team?10.Who has the resources I need?11.Who will share their resources with me?12.With whom should I share my resources?

9. Who will make a good member of my team?
10. Who has the resources that I need?
11. Who will share their resources with me?
12. With whom should I share my resources?

If this does nothing more than spare someone the hurt of being misused then it will have served its purpose. I hope you enjoy this reading and that it will help guide you and assist you in navigating the landscape of an ever more confusing and chaotic world. Insight and clarity into what the people in your life have to offer you and how they are viewing you, can only benefit in the long run even if it isn't what you want to hear.

"The tree of knowledge is often watered with the tears of disillusionment."

"A smooth sea never produced a skillful sailor."

"Little children step on your toes. Big children step on your heart."

"Little people talk about other people, middle size people talk about things and big people talk about ideas."

"Success is never final and failure is never fatal."

Story of the Soul Tarot Layout[credits]

by Cheryl Lynne Bradley

"I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me:
refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul."
Psalm 142, Verse 4 KJV

"Three things distinguish living from the soul versus living from the ego only. They are: the ability to sense and learn new ways, the tenacity to ride a rough road and the patience to learn deep love over time."
Clarissa Pinkola-Estes "Women Who Run with the Wolves"

"'So I said to my soul, be still and wait without hope,
Because hope would be hope for the wrong thing.
And wait without love, because love would be love for the wrong thing.
But there is yet faith, and the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting."
T.S. Eliot "East Coker"

Soul means many things, both to us as individuals, and in centuries of religious and cultural interpretations, literature, scripture, doctrines and debates. Almost every interpretation varies on the same theme, that every living body is made up of visible, physical matter and an invisible spirit, the soul. The soul is considered by some to be the conscience or the individual consciousness. It is viewed as the centre of energy and as the manifestation of invisible reality in people.

"What is the source of this soul power and how can we tap into it? I believe it often comes from unexpected places. It comes first of all from living close to the heart, and not at odds with it. Therefore, paradoxically, soul power may emerge from failure, depression, and loss. The general rule is that soul appears in the gaps and holes of experience. It is usually tempting to find some subtle way of denying these holes or distancing ourselves from them. But we have all experienced moments when we've lost a job or endured an illness only to find an unexpected inner strength."
Thomas Moore "Care of the Soul"

According to Carl G. Jung, the soul was a link to the unconscious and a personification of its contents which belonged both to the individual and to the spirit world. Jung developed the concept of individuation. Individuation is a process by which we achieve the sense of being a unique individual actively involved in the workings of our soul. The more we can embrace the possibilities of life entering into us, the more individual we are. He felt that only when we embraced our grief could our souls grow.

"Transparent Man, who is seen and seen through, foolish, who has nothing left to hide, who has become transparent through self acceptance; his soul is loved, wholly revealed, wholly existential; he is just what he is, freed from paranoid concealment, from the knowledge of his secrets and his secret knowledge; his transparency serves as a prism for the world and the not-world. For it is impossible reflectively to know thyself; only the last reflection of an obituary may tell the truth, and only God knows our real names."
James Hillman "Myths of Analysis"

Pythagoras believed the soul was a fallen, polluted deity incarcerated in the body and doomed to a perpetual cycle of rebirth. He also believed that the soul could be liberated by ritual purifications which would allow the soul to achieve harmony with the universe. Origen, a third Century Christian Platonist, believed there was a kinship between God and the soul and that knowledge of the divine was a natural state. He viewed the Virgin Birth as the birth of the divine Wisdom in the soul.

Gnosticism held that spiritual beings had grown tired of perfect comtemplation of the God who had shown himself to them in the Logos, the divine Word and Wisdom. They had fallen from the divine world into physical bodies which stopped their descent. The soul could still ascend to God in a slow, steady journey which continued after the death of the physical body. The Apostle Paul distinguished between the soul (psyche) which animated the physical body (soma) and the immortal spirit (pneuma) which was informed by the Holy Spirit. The spirit shone through the psyche onto the complete individual, so that the individual could live and be made whole again after the resurrection.

I have developed the following reading based on some of the higher concepts and lower limitations of our souls. This is a 22 card spread and the whole deck is utilized. To prepare for the reading create your atmosphere as per your typical routine, I recommend a white candle. Close your eyes and focus your consciousness on your soul space, the space between your rib cage and your back. Relax and bring your focus inward. Inhale deeply and release the breath. Formulate the question "What is my soul's story?" and let it drop into your soul space, visualize or simply feel this occurring. Listen for the answer and continue holding the question in your soul. Open your eyes, shuffle your deck and cut the cards in your usual method. One or two words will float into your awareness. Meditate on these words as you deal out the cards in the following layout.

1.3.

4.6.8.

1. What is the burden or beauty of my soul's memory?
2. What informs my soul's understanding?
3. What strengthens or weakens my soul's will?

4. What is sweetest to my soul?
5. What is highest to my soul?
6. What is best to my soul?

7. What is helping or hindering my soul's ability to discern and embrace new ways?
8. What is helping or hindering my soul's perseverance, strength and endurance?
9. What is helping or hindering my soul's patience to learn and accept deep love?

10. 12. 14.

10. What does my soul feel?
11. What does my soul sense?
12. What does my soul believe?
13. What is my soul attached to?
14. What does my soul know?

15. 17. 19.

15. What does my soul have faith in?
16. What does my soul have hope in?
17. What does my soul love?
18. What is my soul waiting for?
19. What fills my soul with peace?

20.22.

20. What is helping or hindering my soul to experience beauty?
21. What is helping or hindering my soul to exercise restraint?
22. What is helping or hindering my soul to surrender to pleasure?

I would recommend this as a good reading to include in your journal in order that you may come back and reflect and meditate on its insights at a later date. Eat something after you have completed the Soul Story to ground yourself again. This reading would be helpful done once a year for insight or on a birthday or anniversary date. Please use it as required if a genuine soul crisis occurs in your life or someone else's. Be prepared for a surprising, insightful and genuine story of the state of your soul. Let self be transparent, send ego to bed along with your lower emotions, fears, anxieties and doubts. The dark beauty of your soul's story is calling you, make time to listen.

"So plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really can endure...that you really are strong, and you really do have worth."
Veronica A. Shofstall "After A While"

"Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me."
Psalm 142, Verse 7 KJV

"For what shall it profit a man, is he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?"
Mark 8, Verses 36, 37 KJV

"For most of human history we have searched for our place in the cosmos. Who are we? What are we? We find that we inhabit an insignificant planet of a humdrum star lost in a galaxy tucked away in some forgotten corner of a universe in which there are far more galaxies than people. We make our world significant by the courage of our questions, and by the depth of our answers."
Carl Sagan

"We gaze up at the same stars, the sky covers us all, the same universe encompasses us. What does it matter what practical system we adopt in our search for the truth? Not by one avenue only can we arrive at so tremendous a secret."
Symmachus 384, C.E.

"The great events of world history are at bottom profoundly unimportant. In the last analysis the essential thing is the life of the individual".
Carl Gustav Jung
