The Goddess As Mother It seems easiest for humankind to recognize, identify with, and call upon the Mother aspect of the Goddess. Physical mothers and the state of motherhood are well known. Because physical mothers tend to be closer to their children than fathers are, the Goddess as Mother seems natural, more accessible.
The Mother aspect of the Goddess is summer, the ripening of all things. She is the re-creation of life, both plant and animal; She is also the creation of universal bodies. She is the high point in all cycles, whether of living or creating, for the Mother blesses and gives with open hands. She is the Great Teacher of the Mysteries.
Symbolically, the Mother aspect is the boiling or churning cauldron, the re-creative pot, and the ripeness of womanhood (or adulthood in general). The day, lustiness, reproduction, creation, in any form and of anything---these are all within Her realm. Traditionally, Her color is red, the color of blood and the life force.
The Mother is associated with adulthood and parenthood. However, as with the other two aspects of the Goddess, Her attributes can be experienced by anyone at any time.
Adulthood means the accepting of responsibilities, particularly those brought about by our own actions or commitments. Accepting the results of our own decisions is one of the the greatest responsibilities humankind has. Too often we try to slide by this by blaming everything on others.
Some psychologists and counselors have not helped the situation; their attitude of "blame everything on the parents" has helped create whole generations of adults who absolve themselves of all responsibility for what they think or do.
By acknowledging the Mother aspect of the Goddess we learn valuable lessons in self-discipline, patience, and responsibility. Mistreating our bodies, whether by excessive food, drugs, alcohol, unsafe sex, too many children, or life-threatening situations, is against Her wishes.
Mistreating our minds, and indirectly our bodies, by low self-esteem, staying in abusive situations, allowing others to physically or mentally beat up on us---these also are not within Her desires.
The Goddess as Mother does not require, in fact does not want, Her creations to abuse themselves in any way.
She does not like or demand deprivation or immolation; the Mother is ripeness and balance, happiness and enthusiasm for life.
The Mother facet of the Goddess is important to us whenever we need the guidance and energy to finish creating something, whether it is a family or a goal or a spiritual journey.
She is the great churning matrix deep within our collective unconscious, the center point of the spiral or circle, the Keeper of the treasure at the end of the labyrinth.
Through the Mother aspect we discover ourselves and our potentials, and learn to take responsibility for our actions.
We learn to reach outward to others and inward to the Divine Center, loving and receiving love.
It is during this learning phase that we need to understand that every act of love, whether physical, mental, or emotional, is a ritual to the Mother Goddess.
Love extends beyond the physical sexual act, encompassing acts of kindness and spiritual love.
The Mother is active working magick, fulfilling the need to make life more comfortable, less demanding, and freer from unnecessary restraints.
It is this aspect of love and the Mother that we need to reawaken within our mental realm.
Humans need to realize that those who find it difficult to express love and sadly lacking in the Mother aspect in their lives.
By choice, consciously or subconsciously, they have chosen to separate themselves from the Mother, from love, and live in lonely isolation. Most of these people yearn for love, for someone with whom they can share and care. They have lost sight of the Mother's injunction: to be loved, one must know how to love.
The Mother is the embodiment of universal law, the Divine Source of life itself. As the Keeper of spiritual treasure, She sits upon Her throne in the center of the labyrinth, patiently waiting for each individual to find his or her way to Her.
Those who try to take shortcuts, who think that a crash course in spirituality will absolve them of self-discipline and the learning of patience, these people will either lose their way in the inner maze or find themselves in a self-created center where the treasure is false.
These are the seekers who, in meditation, always hear what they want to hear, and are always told that whatever they are doing is right. Some of these are dangerous individuals who often call themselves masters or gurus, feeding on the energies of those they persuade to follow them.
Sooner or later, according to Her own laws, the Mother Goddess will bring them back to reality with a crash.
The Mother is the nurturer of all creation. Her love is unconditional, yet, as with physical mothers, She disciplines when necessary.
She has no need, as does the Maiden, to be coy with Her affections; Her sexuality is fully developed, a natural part of life. She is confident in Her independence, going about the business of living while turning a deaf ear to those who think they rule Her.
There is no indecision within Her about Her abilities. She knows She is the matrix of all creation, the Keeper of the cycles and seasons.
As the Maiden dreams of what She can become, so the Mother knows exactly what She is.
The Mother aspect is the joy of the moment, indeed joy in every moment. Too often we lock ourselves into one phase of the Goddess, thereby missing the growth and experience of the other two.
We plunge ourselves into work, whether it be a job, exercise, or "enjoying" ourselves. Everything in life becomes serious. It is no wonder that hypertension and heart problems are death-dealers to humanity.
The Goddess dislikes imbalance. She will correct the situation by whatever means necessary if we do not.
By studying and meditating upon the Triple Goddess, it is possible to bring our lives back into balance, back to the natural rhythm of Nature, back to sanity and wholeness.
The Mother aspect of the Goddess is synonymous with the adulthood stage of humans.
In females, She is the Full Moon or fullness of menstrual life.
To males, She is the urge to procreate, to bond with another adult for life-companionship.
To both sexes, the Mother aspect is represented by the fully grown sexual drive; the stretching of the mind, body, and spirit in goals; the reveling in the joy of itself. She is confidence, responsibility, and increasing knowledge of life and the cycles of life.
This stage of the Goddess can be experienced at any human age.
If one is still in the physical Maiden stage of life, one can learn to accept responsibility and nurture confidence.
If one is in the Crone stage, one can keep working with the Mother through nurturing and creating activities.
The Mother Goddess is the most familiar in all cultures around the world. She comes in many forms and variations, but underneath they are all the same.
The Mother is the fullness of life, the Creatures, the Wheel-Turner for the seasons, the divine receptacle of all knowledge.
Sometimes She was called Earth Mother, sometimes Sky Mother. She is the divine Teacher at the calm center of the spiritual labyrinth, the One who initiates seekers into the deeper Mysteries. She does not run before us like the Maiden, but walks beside us, hand in hand, whispering revelations and prophecies. Her knowledge is the treasure of the inner maze.
The Mother is the Guardian of the Treasure, the Empress of the inner and outer worlds, the High Priestess of all things spiritual. We need Her cooperation or we cannot benefit from the spiritual treasure we find at the Divine Center.
