Years of the Witch by Don Lewis
| What follows is the Witch's calendar of years. It is similar to the oriental calendar of years. Below is a chart showing which years have been ruled by which signs. The years both affect the individual and society, but are especially useful in planning in regards to what to expect from society. They may be regarded as subtly shading an individuals astrological chart.
| Sun | Moon | Earth | Fire | Air | Water | Plant | Animal | Stone | 1949 | 1950 | 1951 | 1952 | 1953 | 1954 | 1955 | 1956 | 1957 | 1958 | 1959 | 1960 | 1961 | 1962 | 1963 | 1964 | 1965 | 1966 | 1967 | 1968 | 1969 | 1970 | 1971 | 1972 | 1973 | 1974 | 1975 | 1976 | 1977 | 1978 | 1979 | 1980 | 1981 | 1982 | 1983 | 1984 | 1985 | 1986 | 1987 | 1988 | 1989 | 1990 | 1991 | 1992 | 1993 | 1994 | 1995 | 1996 | 1997 | 1998 | 1999 | 2000 | 2001 | 2002 | | SUN
A year for beginning things. A time for self-expression, creativity, and originality. Also self-centerdness. A time of individuals leading large movements -dictators, popular heroes, etc ... Everywhere you will find the individual on center stage, with movements and profes- sions being dominated both by rampant self-expression and by the emergeance of "stars". A time of much creating and new ideas, flamboyance and egoism. Much color and drama in society. 1967, 1976, and 1985 were all Sun years, as will be 1994.
| MOON
Emotional and inspirational elements will be strong. Compassion and a desire to help others will also be much in evidence. And psychic matters will be very popular. It can also indicate delusions, illusions, and ideological clashes. Love and Peace will be preached in Moon years, and there will be many esoteric approaches competing. There will be much inner-seeking and growth, as well as confusion and growing pains. Sex and the pleasures of the world -the more unusual the better-will be much sought after. 1968, 1977, and 1986 were all Moon years, as will be 1995.
| EARTH
The years of Sun and Moon are obviously ruled by their namesakes. However the remaining zseven years of the cycle each have a planetary ruler different from their name. Earth is ruled by Jupitur, being the third year of the cycle. It is a year whose keynote will be expansion, in all ways. It may especially be marked by an expansion of consciousness for many, people, comming to a new understanding and acceptance of ideas formerly foreign to them. It is a cheerful, optimistic year, with fertility and growth in all directions. They arts may be especially accented, as will be beauty. It is likely to be a light-hearted and high-spirited year, marked by luck and talent. It may also be careless, self-indulgent, unthinking toward others, and overly extravagant. It may also a time of oversensibility to the opinions of others. 1969, 1978, and 1987 were all Earth years, as will be 1996.
| FIRE
The fourth year of the cycle is ruled by Saturn. At first the connection between Saturn and fire may seem strange, but one must remember that the Lord of the Dead, of whom Saturn is a form, is also often the God of the Forge, as Ptah, Hephaestos, Ogoun, and others, and that Smithry has always been regarded as one of the magical arts. The Fire of the Fire year is, as I interpret it, not simply elemental fire, more represented in the cycle by the Sun, but rather the harnessed fire of the forge. The Fire year is a year of Tests, self- development, and transformation. Saturn's lessons may be difficult or painful, as fire may burn, but learning them successfully is the process of personal growth, tempering the individual and his/her powers as ore is rendered into metal objects. This is a year in which foundations may be laid, tied to the solid earth energy of the four directions. It is a time for perserverance, self-control, and seeking truth. It is a time for thorough grounding, and for personal transformation. The current year is of Fire, as were 1961, 1970, and 1979, each of which ushered in a new era.
| AIR
Now comes the influence of Mercury. All limits may be broken or transcended -for what can hold back the Air? It is a time of much change and transience in society. Many new ideas and movements, many of them shortlived. Many discoveries and intellectual developments. Much, much communication. At best this is a time of earnest searching for knowledge and self-expression. It is also a time of superficiality, of fads, of instability and temporary conditions. It can also be a time of lying (especially through the media), trickery, and selfishness -all negative attributes of Mercury. 1962, 1971, and 1980, were all Air years, as will be next year, 1989.
| WATER
Water is ruled by Venus, who governs the number six. It can be a very forunate year, for the sixth number governs harmony, love, and homelife. But as the precedent of seven, six was also considered unlucky as well as overly worldly -another side of Venus. It may be a year dominated by charity, concern for others, and social conscience. But then again it may also be typified by selfishness, prejudice, and debauchery. The key word is Emotion, For the Lady of the Waters can be either a placid lake, or sixty foot waves. Emotion can be positive or negative, creative or destructive, as can this year. Hominess and domesticity may be marked, as may be agoraphobia or emotional dependence. 1963, 1972, and 1981 were Water years, as will be 1990.
| PLANT
The seventh year of the cycle is ruled by Neptune. At best it is a year of serenity, peace, and gentleness. At worst it is a time with no direction, blown about like a leaf on the wind with nothing being accomplished. A time of hazy goals, and dreamy emotions. The psychic element will be very strong, and it is a time both of serious revelations and of false illusions. 1964, 1973, and 1982 were all Plant years, as will be 1991. The much awaited year 2000 will be a Plant year.
| ANIMAL
The Animal year is ruled by Mars, and is imbued with both His positive and negative qualities. It is a time of energy and vitality, reproduction and proliferation. The Life Force is strong and bursting out all over. Ambition, aggression, and even ruthlessness are marked. Confusion, the result of the surging life-force, is likely to be rampant, due to many people running in many directions in pursuit of different goals. Headless chickens will be common. Everyone will be out for his/her own, and not too concerned about how they get it. It might seem as if society is at war -except there are far too many sides, and all of them fighting at the same time. You will find boundless energy bounding all over the place! 1965 was an Animal year, as were 1974 and 1983. The next will be 1992.
| STONE
The Stone is the final year in the cycle and will lead back to the Sun. It may also be rendered the "Mineral" year. It is ruled by Uranos. It also has an association with Saturn. You should remember that stone takes many forms including sand, rock, crystal, and molten magma. Mountains are of stone, but so is lava. Influenced by Saturn stone may be static and enduring. Influenced by Uranos it is also explosive and changeable. Stone people and years will be marked by a strong idealism and by a coolly dispassionate sense of logic and judgement. There is a tendency toward strange and eccentric ideas and behavior, a love of the new and different, and an absolute demand for personal freedom -which by no means is necessarily intended to be extended to anyone else. Stone persons are romantic, and humanitarian, often with a great sense of "cause" and a deep desire for justice -but many times in a very abstract sense, divorced in someways from the people they seek to help, and utterly unwilling to see anyone's side but their own. In addition there may be a certain tendency toward fickleness. The occult and the psychic may be expected to be somewhat popular. 1966, 1975, and 1984, were Stone years. 1993 will be the next | |
