MODING: Don't do it!
Moding, also called modding, or autoing in some places, is a NO-NO. It has come to my attention that further explanation on this subject is needed, as apparently not everyone knows what this means, so I have made a list of things that are considered moding. Let me say here that the GTI is NOT any other chat room/community, and we do not go by the rules of any other chat room/community. The rules of other places do not apply here.
This is only a partial list. Take what is said and use common sense to apply it to other situations.
1. Forcing a hit. This refers to physical and magical attacks. You can make an attack, but you cannot tell another player that your attack was successful. It is up to the other player to know their abilities and what they can dodge or counter effectively.
Example - moding: ~Myranda swings her sword and cuts Eros's head off in a single blow.~
Example - acceptable: ~Myranda swings her sword toward Eros's neck in an attempt to cut his head off.~
In the first example, Myranda does not give Eros a chance to counter. In the second, Eros must know whether or not he can dodge the blow or if it will kill him.
Example - moding: ~Myranda holds out her hand and paralizes Eros.~
Example - acceptable: ~Myranda holds out her hand and whispers a spell to paralize Eros.~
In the second example, the intention of the spell is indicated, and the player, if able, can still avoid it.
2. Refusing a hit. Moding can also be not taking a hit when your character could not otherwise avoid it. You must know your character's strengths and abilities and how they would be affected by any attack or spell aimed at them. If someone directs and attack, or any other type of action, at your character, you must respond to it.
Example - moding: ~Myranda has her back to the wall with tables on either side of her.~ ~Eros sends an enormous fireball straight toward Myranda.~ ~Myranda dodges.~
Example - acceptable: ~Myranda has her back to the wall with tables on either side of her.~ ~Eros sends an enormous fireball straight toward Myranda~ ~Myranda drops to the floor and rolls under a table, her leg getting burned by the fire.~
If Myranda is trapped, she cannot simply dodge the attack. I have to know how quickly Myranda can move to know if she will avoid the attack completely. In this case, dropping and moving out of the way takes time, and she is not quick enough. She takes a hit.
3. Knowledge. You cannot use OOC knowledge in character. If you, the mun/typist knows something about a character that the character you play would not know, you cannot use that information. Likewise, if a character is thinking something, not saying it out loud, your character cannot react to their thoughts. No, no "mindreaders". It gets old.
Example - moding: Myranda's typist knows that Adlin is tied up in the basement, unable to escape. Myranda the character suddenly runs to the basement to rescue Adlin. (This example was taken from a previous GTI storyline.)
Example - moding: ~Eros thinks that Myranda is crazy.~ ~Myranda gets angry at Eros for thinking that.~
In the first example, Myranda wouldn't know where Adlin is unless someone tells her, or unless she finds out some other way. She can't suddenly come upon the knowledge. In the second example, Myranda would not know what Eros is thinking, so she cannot get angry at him for it unless he says it out loud. Another form of this is automatically knowing characters' names. This is minor and is often overlooked, but it is still moding. Your character cannot know another's name unless they are introduced or it is overheard, or your character has another way of knowing who the other is. To say that you know their name because you read it from their mind is moding.
