I received this from a rel;iable source:-

Subject: Huge Virus coming. Not a joke

        PLEASE READ & FORWARD

Hi Everybody, I checked with Norton Anti-Virus, and they are gearing up for this virus!
I checked Snopes (URL above:), and it is for real!!
Get this E-mail message sent around to your contacts ASAP.
PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!
You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message

with an attachment entitled 'POSTCARD FROM HALLMARK,' regardless of who sent
it to you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which 'burns' the
whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be received from  someone
who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list. This is the reason
why you need to send this e-mail to all your contacts It is better to receive
this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.
If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even though sent to you by a
friend, do not open it! Shut down your computer immediately
.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by
Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by
McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus.  This
virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital
information is kept.
COPY THIS E-MAIL, AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT
TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US

This is partly true and partly false

The best place to check for clarity, and clear up the lies from the truth, and learn further details about this virus is Snopes itself..

Snopes reports this virus as real.. and goes into much more details about various other email subject headings it can send itself as.. but.. it also clears up a few points as not true..

Although the Postcard virus is real, it isn't a "BIG VIRUS COMING" (it's already been around in multiple forms for a long time now), it will not "burn the whole hard disc" of your computer, CNN didn't classify it as the "worst virus" ever, and it doesn't arrive in messages bearing a subject line of 'Invitation.'

There are a lot of viruses around that do the same thing.. the general rule is don't open something that anyone sends, if the message accompanied with it seems out of their usual character, or there's no message at all.. always check they did send it.. and if they haven't acknowledged that they sent the thing then it'll be a virus

The threat of possibly getting a virus is another good reason not to have the preview pane open in Outlook Express or (for Vista) Windows Mail.

If anyone wants instructions on how to get rid of the preview pane, let me know.

To my knowledge I have never seen a virus that will 'attack through the preview pane in Outlook etc.

They require you to click on a link and thats when you will find you are in trouble...

Unless someone could inform me otherwise...Preview panes are safe.

There are so many viruses that you can get just by day to day surfing and you probably have no idea you have got them....

The greatest offenders are usually in the teen sites...Music downloads etc...so if you have a teen you can be pretty sure your pc is riddled with viruses, unless you run up to date anti virus...It is advised to run about 3 as they all catch different viruses...and Norton isnt necessarily the best and it certainly should be run alongside others like Adaware..BitDefender..AVG ,,Avast...etc.

You could be scared of getting the 'Hallmark' virus when you could have a subseven trojan or similar....already!

They can look through your webcam, even when its turned off....open your CD...in fact do everything on your pc that you can do....

Another common one is a "dialer'....They use your phone line to call 1-900 lines...so YOU pay and the telephone company makes you accountable.....You have to pay!

I have had both these viruses...they are very common...

Don't think anyone wants your info....?

Want them watching you (through the 'off' webcam?) while you go about your day to day life?

Just another 'warning'...

Nick...dont you just hate that snopes stoppped allowing copy/paste...lol

Ahh Liz yeah you had that prob too?.. I had to visit another site with the same paragraph to copy it that way

Ysbird is making a good point.. the preview pane opens the email before you can avoid opening it.. which means with the latest email in the inbox.. all the html, Javascript code etc just loads

So.. for that (and reading all emails).. another option is to set your email inbox settings to disable html (read text only).. that way the nasty code that installs a virus won't execute and virus-ridden pictures and other files won't load.. they'll just be attachments instead

Norton is rubbish if you ask me, I've tried it two or three times in the past, and it never found anything.. but like Liz says it helps to run more than one anti-virus program.. they are like different doctors.. they can only detect viruses they know about / have learned / read up on (which is why updating them helps)

Like you say Liz, there are different types of virus/ virus combination, trojans, diallers, worms etc.. they can attempt to trick us in different ways (social engineering.. making it look as though a message / email came from a real person)

Although the Preview Pane isn't as big a problem as it used to be a few years back, it is still a possible means for hackers to compromise yours system.

I personally hate turning off HTML so have the preview pane disabled. Reason being is that hackers will always find a way around MS security. Also another reason why I don't use I.E.

On a side note, got an email from a friend a few months back. Because of the Subject line alone, I figured it had to be a virus, so didn't open it. I emailed her to warn her that she may have a virus, and sure enough she did and the email sent was a worm virus. She had been using the preview pane and that was how she got it. She eventually got rid of it, but took her a long time to do it. It wasn't a high risk virus, more of an annoyance than anything else.
