Copyright No-No's
As many of you already know, there are many artists that allow us to use their artwork for making tags, signatures, backgrounds, websets, etc. However, there are also many artists that do not. They are usually the big organisations or artists that sell their art for commercial use. Below you will find a list of what you cannot use, no matter whether it is in MSN groups or elsewhere.
Licenced Artists: The use of the work by licenced artists MUST have appropriate credit on them, a licence number, and also follows the terms of use. Appropriate credit means the copyright symbol and the artist's name (no url). The licence number must belong to the person that made the tag or background. Following terms of use means that whatever the art was used for must not be violating any rules that the artist or site where the art was from has set. If by any chance you are to get tubes or images of licenced art, they were distributed illegally and you should not use them.
Famous People: They may not be artists, but they have rights too. Although there may be images of them almost everywhere, they are not allowed to be posted anywhere in MSN. Just like you need permission from a specific artist to use their artwork, you need permission from that specific famous person and their photographer to use any images of them. Think about it this way...you most likely wouldn't want YOUR photo distributed everywhere without knowing what it's being used for, etc.
Unknown artists: If you have an image or tube you want to use, but don't know who the artist is, don't use it until you find out. Exceptions to this are dolls, flowers, and nature scenes (unless it is known that the artist requires it). It is known that most yahoo groups that do "tube shares" distribute masses of tubes without any copyright information on them, and even distribute no-no's. So it is advisable to either stay well away from yahoo tube sharing groups. If you do not want to do that, or if you had gotten tubes and images another way and don't know the artist, there are many ways you can find out the artist. Copyright Corner is a very useful group to search for what artwork belongs to which artist.
Big companies, organisations, and trademarks: Any of these are not allowed to be used, no matter what. There are no exceptions to this rule.
