Hi all, I'm about to do a 'welcome' type sign for a friend and it will be hung outside where it will be exposed to the elements. She tells me it will be in the sun and will get rained on, etc. It will probably be a combination of fret and intarsia. What's the best glue to use and whats the best finish that will hold up well? Does it make any difference as far as satin vs glossy as to which will hold up best? Can you tell this is the first piece I'll be making for outside display? lol Thanks for any help....Dee |

Dee, I would use Titebond II or III for the glue. Both can be used outdoors. Finish with a spar/marine type varnish which are made for exterior use. There are many kinds and brands available. Tom(tas2181) |

AS an ex house painter, interior/exterior, I would choose an oil based exterior trim paint or a spar varnish. Over time all finishes when exposed to hard weather will break down. Spar varnish and dance floor polyurathanes break down fast. Usally once a year touch up. This has been my experiance anyway. I wouldn't use glue at all. How bout staples or finish nails? That way you know it will stay up. |

Gorilla glue is about the best glue for inside or outside, it fills in small gaps as it dries and if you don't store it carefully it will dry in the bottle, I got a water based urethane for exterior finishing at my Benjamin Moore store, the stuff was really nice, dried quick and I was suprised that only one coat, I tried to double coat the pieces and the finish would just bubble up on the second coat I was amazed, and as a general note Gloss paint and urethane does hold up better than flat or semi outside. good luck woodman |
