Hey everyone!  I haven't needed to post anything in a looooooooong time, but now I have a question...

Does any one know how toxic Purple Heart wood dust is?  I know breathing it is, and I plan to wear a mask made just for toxic dust, but what about covering my arms and hands?  What about my face?  I plan to do my husbands purple heart medal on this purple heart wood I already received.  I will close the shop door, close off the kitty door, open the windows and scroll it all at once while he's gone to his uncle's for a couple of weeks.  It is 11:00 here and 76 degrees (F)! I also plan on cleaning up all the dust that I can.  Is there anything else about this wood I need to know?  I know it's very hard and I have blades set aside just for it.  I will finish it with non-yellowing polycrylic gloss clear coat.  Thank you for your help!

from my experience I've never had a reaction from any wood. most woods are at least somewhat toxic including purpleheart.
  • Purpleheart: sensitizer/eye & skin, nausea/small/dust, wood/rare
  • statement taken from     http://www.mimf.com/archives/toxic.htm
  • from what I know most reactions to wood are allergenic in nature and an individual matter to deal with.    Start out by cutting any wood a short while then walk away for a short while to see if it affects you and always be on your guard to watch for any reactions from wood no matter how many times you have used it.   Mike
