Today I received a new catalog from Sloan's Woodshop and it had a message that  because there is a worldwide shortage of Baltic birch plywood they are having a difficult time in finding and purchasing it and that the price is constantly changing.

What would create such a shortage? Is it supply and demand, or is it a shortage of birch? Are there just a few companies making it?

I like using it for a couple of reasons. First, it's inexpensive (or at least it used to be), it's easy to work with, and it can be stained or painted to look like other wood species, just to mention a few.

I hope this is a short-term problem.

Any information you can share is appreciated.

El

The article I read on the topic said that with a extremely wet cutting season and not a lot of wood got cut to make the plywood, they also stated that with drying time it takes a year to produce the Ply? so they are "a year behind" and the prices will be going up in the neighborhood of  70%. I like the birch too I make my xmas ornaments from it.they also stated that you could get apple ply but it only comes in half inch and is expensive also,  I guess I'kk have to start planing down pallets for my ornaments next year. good luck Howard
