Lloyd,
Lots of folks use Adobe Photoshop Elements or Corel Paint Shop Pro.  These are the 2 most popular but there are a myriad of choices out there.  Gimp is another popular free program (just google Gimp).  Be sure to check out our free tips as well and feel free to ask any questions you might have.  Pattern Making Tips

Also check out inkscape, it is program that is very useful in the final process of cleaning up a pattern.

Lloyd, Hi there. I use Serif Photoplus. It is a photoshop clone and it is free. I have never had any trouble looking at a tutuorial for say photoshop or draw and not been able to quickly (within minutes) figure out the adaptation to the programs I use.

Also Serif offers drawplus which has it's own advantages.

Hope this helps, I'm off to find or make a dragon to wrap around a box, cheers.

Thank you all for your help. Have downloaded a free 30 day of coral paintshop pro photo x2. am still struggling with dividing the photo into parts, an adjusting the brightness, an contrast to develope the pattern, so if anyone has any help I am sure open. But I keep playing with it, one day I may make a pattern from a photo
