As I promised I well explain my method of patternmaking, but first let me say that Gary Browning was my inspiration from the beginning, his website and later his club along with his books have molded my ability,so I want to thank Gary and the wonderful members who are so generous with their gift of artistic scrolling.I must apologize for my grammar in advance, thank God you need not know how to spell to work a scroll saw.
I use ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS but most other art or photo programs well work.A note I classify pictures in two groups, one is for holding or close display like putting on the cover of a picture album the second is to see from distance[pictures with a lot of shadows].Thes two methods work for each.
First get your picture and save it [edit-duplicate-image]or[layer-duplicate layer].Now go to [image-adjustments-threshold],be sure the check is in the preview box, now your slider is at 128 normally, move it back and forth observing every element of the picture, eyes eye brows, nose, mouth, hair and small important details like eye lashes and wrinkles etc.take note of the element or portion of element that needs change, now click [cancel].Now go to the MARQUEE TOOL and select ether elliptical or retangular with the right mouse button, now inclose a component like the nose then go back to [image-adjustments-threshold] and adjust the nose to your liking then click O.K.repeat this process for each feature individually. Now click once on a bear part of the picture to close the marquee tool and for the last time go to [image-adjustments-threshold] make final adjustments to all the rest of the picture. Now print and use a pencil and a wite out pen to add or eliminate lines or shadows. This method is very fast.Another 2nd method is [filter-sketch-photo copy] or a combination of the two.I hope this is not to confusing but I tried and reamber I am not a pro and I know their are many ways of doing things but I wanted to contribute someway.I have add Tom Cruz and a lady pattern from this method  to my album, any advice, comments,or questions are welcome,YOURS ALEX[BOBO]

Now you are ready to use the [eraser and paint brush tools] and later the [burn and dodge tools].Reamber by right clicking your mouse on any tools arrow [found near the tool in the lower right corner]you'll get more choices.Another 2nd mothod is [filter-shetch-photo copy] or a combination of the two.

 PS.  Hope this helps.

Allmost always[lasso] areas you want to work on. You may need to[ zoom] a eye and then[ lasso] one  portion of the eye at a time to get the detail you may need or the shadow you are looking for.Important within the [lasso] you can use either method [image-adjustment-threshold] or [filter-sketch-photocopy] to realize your particular goal.

Thanks Alex!  What an awesome tool that is!  So can you tell me what some of the other tools are?   I know the square, eraser, paint brush, pencil and now the lasso, but do we use any other tools for our scroll projects?

Connie

PS - hope your move went well!

I am going to tell you the secret tool, but not yet.First of all , to change the seize of your paint brush and eraser in the upper left hand corner next to the picture of the tool you are using are numbers you can click on to change their seize. You already knew that , o.k then try this suggestion,If you are drawing with the eraser,or the paint brush change the seize of your tool often so your picture dosen't look like a stick drawing.I know what you are thinking, how do you draw with a eraser? In dark areas you use the eraser to draw with.
Dodge and Burn tools

The toning tools consist of the dodge tool and the burn tool. Used to lighten or darken areas of the image, the dodge and burn tools are based on a traditional photographer's technique for regulating exposure on specific areas of a print. Photographers hold back light to lighten an area on the print (dodging) or increase the exposure to darken areas on a print (burning).

I did not forget the secret tool. It is practice.Good luck,

Alex

Alex, No I don't know that one, but I sure would love to use it!!! Could you give me the low down on it? Thanks so much for your help.  You know some programs just don't come with books now-a-days and I'm the type of person who needs the info written out!! LOL!!

Alex, I also forgot to ask, what does the dodge & burn tools look like?  My tools are on a bar that hangs out in the screen.  Has all different types of symbols, one looks like a stamp,  one looks like a drop of rain, an exacto knife tip,  a pin with a ball head, an eyedropper, I'm wondering if the magic wand you talked about is one of the items, (it is white at the left end and black at the back), there is even a pointing finger. So many things, don't know how to use them or what they are called to check with help on what to do with them!!  I love my little window that has the colors, swatches & brushes, that makes it easy to get to.  Forgot to mention, I am a very visual person too, but I have to know what to look for if it doesn't have the words pop up when you put the curser on the item.

Click on the magic wand - click on the background.[If you get bleeding into the main object-go to edit-undo magic wand and select paint brush and draw a line closing the gap where the bleeding is occuring.]Now do the magic wand again, then click edit clear.

Continue  to use the magic wand on any colors you want to remove and then clean up with the eraser.

Haven't got to finish it, but I bought "Teach Yourself Photoshop Elements 2 in 24 Hours" by Carla Rose from Amazon. Got it out of the used section for $6.25 or something like that. It was however new. As said, haven't really gotten into it yet but it seems like a good instruction manual. Even a MacHead like me can follow it.
