Hi: I just visited the local woodworking store and tried out a DeWalt scroll saw. It seemed to work nice. It was made in Taiwan which made me a little uncomfortable. After doing some research on saws I noticed that the DeWalt and the Excalibur are both made by the same company. They seemed very similar. Is the DeWalt simply a less expensive version of the Excalibur? Are there differences other than the $300 price. I know some of you have the DeWalt and seemed content with them. The only saw that I could find that was still made outside of the Far East was the Hegner. A friend has one, but it costs about $1500. That is a lot of scroll work. Does anyone have one of those? Looking for all the advice I can get. Thanks.

Charlemagne72,

I have both a DeWalt and a Excaliber 21".  They are very similar.  A while back DeWalt decided to stop letting Sommerville Design (the people who make the EX) and moved all production of the scrollsaw to Taiwan.  I am lucky to say that I got my DeWalt a long time ago and was made in canada.  I know most of the older ones are great, but it seems that aLOT of people are now having trouble out of the newer ones.  Just go thru the message boards and you will see that.  If you can afford the Excaliber I would get it.  The EX 21 has a tilting head which is great!  The table does not move when you are going to do any bevel work, it is the arms of the saw!!  I've had mine since May and I LOVE it!

If you need any more advice or help you can e-mail me at [email protected].

I hope this helps,

Leldon

Also, if you look on the motor decal of the Dewalt DW788 there is a "Type 1" or "Type 2".  The type 1 is older and MUCH better than the type 2.  The type 2 is what I have and am quite happy with it but it has problems with the distance between blade holders and the table surface is not nearly as solid as the Type 1.  If I could do it over and had a choice, if the choice is still available that is, I'd opt for a Type 1.

Hi: Links don't seem to want to work this morning.
Over the week end I may have found an old Dewalt saw. It must be 15 years old. A guy gave it to his wife as a present and when they divorced he took it with him. She is going to have her children ask if he wants to sell it. I'm going to see if it was made in Canada since it is that old. If so I may try to buy it if he doesn't want an arm and a leg for it.

Take a look at the RBI Hawk.  I have had mine for 6 years and love it.  Think the link to their site is www.rbitools.com

Can't be 15 years old.  Dewalts came out in 1997.
