Shane,
I use the stand that came with my Dewalt but if I were to build myself a stand I would first determine what I would be using to sit on to do my sawing and by trial and error determine what would be the most comfortable height.
The stand itself would have 3 legs- two in the front and an adjustable height leg in the rear in case you might want to tilt the saw towards you. Some like the saw positioned that way. The three legs give a much more solid base than a 4 legged model on an uneven floor.
Also make sure that you have a shelf or at least braces near the bottom to put extra weight on in case you need it to lessen vibration.( like sand bags)
Also highly recommended is to get a foot switch if you don't have one. Saves a lot of arm movement turning the saw on and off and you can stop the saw a lot faster if you should have a blade break. Wouldn't be without mine.
