After discovering the "Portrait Freedom" web site, I became interested in scrolling some portraits.  Thanks to a great tutorial on Paint Shop Pro by Andy Deane, I was able to make 2 patterns which I have cut.  The results were acceptable but certainly not the quality of some I've seen posted in this group or on the freedom site.

My question:  I have a Dremel 1680 scroll saw.  Is this an acceptable saw for portrait work?  If not what would you suggest?  I'm not adverse to spending a reasonable amount of money for a better saw if the difference would be worth it.

Also on the Dremel I have a difficult time properly installing the blades.  Is this due to a lack of experience or do others have this problem as well?

  Any response would be appreciated.

Hi Gary. I have a Dremel and have been cutting on it for about a year with good results. I did have problems at first with threading the blades with the guard on. though your probably not supposed too, I just took the guard off.I haven't had any problems since then. I use spiral blades so I don't have the vibration. Hope this helps.I'm really happy with my Dremel though, Good luck and happy cutting.

Hello Gary,

Thanks for the kudo's on the tutorial.  It's exciting for me to read that a bit of my effort brought somebody the kind of satisfaction I've learned to live for through pattern making and cutting portraits.

To answer your question about the  Dremel scroll saw.  I'm sure you can cut with that saw and achieve masterful results.  For how many years was it all done by hand with akward and cumbersome saws?  The results still astound those of us who are passionate about expressing our art through wood!!  Are there better saws, indeed!  Delta starts out with great saws at around $2-300, Dewalt around $500 fully loaded, and up from there all the way through the Excalibur, RBI Hawk series and the Hegner.  Brands are like asking 100 people Ford, GM or Chrysler?  LOL  A good percent would probably answer with Volvo, Honda or Mercedes!  LOLOL

My best advice, find as many people as you can with as many different saws and ask to play with them.  I'd let anyone sit behind my saw and give it a whirl and find most in the scroll saw communities are that way.  Join a club where you get constant and personal feedback if there's a club in your area.  Go to shows, check them out ... it's as much fun as it is frustrating sometimes.  I'm a DeWalt 788 user and LOVE IT!!  I feel there's nothing I can't do with this saw ... I do have personal limitations though but that's more like having Adult ADD!!  ROTF  If I'd have had more $$ available I'd probably own an RBI Hawk.

If you're ever around SW Ontario, hollar and I'll have the patterns glued up with your name on them!!

Andy,

I know it's probably not my place to say this..But I just read your post and felt I had to say something.

I commend you on your reply to the young man asking for guidance.

It is people like yourself and others that help keep scrolling alive and growing...with your "can do"  attitude and helpful non-condescending remarks You and some others have kept me motivated to try and become a better scroller, and a better person.  I am more of a lurker than a poster on this site and I apologize for this.

Anyway just wanted stick in my 2 cents....Thank YOU!

Thank you very much for the kind comments Mike.  I get so much encouragement and advice through members of this group.  To be able to give a little back is my priviledge.  It'll be a long time coming until I've returned even half of what I've received here.  And that's what it's all about .. boop boop de doo!  LOL

~Andy,
Re:  "Dewalt around $500 fully loaded"

You should specify that for $500, one can buy the DeWalt scrollsaw with a light and saw stand... that is not a fully loaded scrollsaw; it's just all the options DeWalt offers.

There are fully loaded saws on the market... but the DeWalt falls far short of that.

A fully loaded DeWalt would also have a foot pedal on/off switch, a mechanism for holding the upper arm up to assist in top loading, some means of blade storage and some sort of vac attachment to remove sawdust as you create it.  The first three of the above options are available from other sources.  A vac. attachment for the DeWalt scrollsaw is sorely lacking in the marketplace.  The fact is that DeWalt's scrollsaw cannot be bought "fully loaded".

Spence

PS  I use the DeWalt 788 as my primary scrollsaw.

How true Spence!!  LOL  You forgot the magnifier light though.  ROTF  I just picked one up from Busy Bee tools up here in Canada last week.  I've been looking at them and thought they were more expensive that I could justify.  I got lucky and walked in on a "Managers Special" price.  Sure wish I'd bought one a LONG time ago.  LOVE IT!!
