Hi, My husband is a member of this group, and raves about ya'll constantly. I thought this might be a good place to ask my question. I am buying him a planer, and have no idea what I am looking for. Our local hardware store consists of Lowes. The young man there wasn't much help. Any idea of what I should be looking for or asking before I make the purchase? I was planning on a reasonable priced one to start with, then if he uses it often, upgrading in a year of so. Thanks for any suggestions!  Annette

Check out Grizzly Tools online. They have a good 12" planer for a bit over $400

Hi Annette. I am a tool specialist for home depot, to bad you don't have one of those lol. Lowes sells a delta I believe that is a good planer. They may also sell a Dewalt, but the delta will be more in your price range. Whatever one you buy, make sure it has a head lock. If you ask they should know what that is. Good luck with it.   Dave

Home  Depot sells Rigid tools and the planer has a life time warranty. I seriously consider it. I own one and have also owned a Delta and the Rigid has more power than the Delta.

Hi, Annette, I would suggest that you talk it over with your Hubby !  Unless you want it to be a suprise. Don't depend on anyone at the Lowes or any other to know what is best for you. Most of them don't know !!  Your husband can look at it & know what will be best for him. It's an investment, so use care. If you know someone who is a friend, they may be able to help too.   Good luck          Perk

I have had a Delta 12 1/2 planner for several years and it has never failed me.  I plan a lot of oak and walnut and have never had a problem with the planner.  It is sold at  Lowes.  I also agree with Perk, take or tell your husband about your buying plans.  Hope this helps.   Tim
