From: Robyn | Sent: 21/10/2004 14:09 | Cannons weren't the only thing to ride on in Gettysburg! Markie got to ride on the grocery stores merry-go-round, first the duck, then the horse! What a spoiled Markie... | Reply
| | From: Robyn | Sent: 22/10/2004 20:34 | Course, this was all before Markie came to Minnesota. He'd always been such a well behaved bear... I carefully packed Markie into my luggage and checked it through to Minneapolis by way of Chicago. However, my flight leaving Buffalo was delayed, I just bearly made my connection in Chicago, and needless to say, the luggage (and Markie) didn't make it. After watching the baggage carosel go round and round for 20 minutes I knew Markie hadn't arrived yet. I filled out the proper paperwork to get my luggage delivered when it arrived. I thought it would still be that night, but it didn't actually get to me until mid day the next day. And boy was I surprised when I pulled Markie out of my bag! He'd been partying all night in Chicago, picked up some college girl, been drinking (as evidenced by the empty whiskey bottles and can of Budweiser) AND taken up cigar smoking! | | | |

| | From: Robyn | Sent: 26/10/2004 16:54 | After chastising Markie for acting so irresponsibly while in Chicago, I thought things would settle down and he'd be a good little bear. Seems not.... He picked up some biker dude and raced thru the city going 202 mph (that part is true, btw, some kid [not Markie's friend] was clocked by plane going 202 mph on a road just south of me) ! | | | Reply
| | From: Robyn | Sent: 28/10/2004 14:15 | I thought maybe I should take Markie someplace a little calmer, appeal to the woodsie side of his nature, so we went to the botanical gardens. He loved looking at the koi in the pond with Abby. He saw some fish in there bigger than he is! Then we went to the north garden where the semi-tropical plants are kept. He couldn't resist climbing the fig tree that's been there for generations, its lower trunk scarred over the years with the initials of lovers. But when we got to the fountain of the wood nymph he thought he could climb that too! It's very HOT and muggy in that room, a welcome retreat in the middle of a Minnesota winter, where all the tropical palms and such reside. Markie had a wonderful time! | | | |

It's a lovely campus and the fall colors there were outstanding. Seems colleges always plant a variety of trees that cover the entire color chart of autumn. We walked around for awhile and then he wanted to rest under the vine covered arbor. It's just outside the Performance Arts building where my daughter spends most of her time. Markie loved this modern sculpture near the fountain. I'm not sure what it's supposed to be, but Markie thinks it looks like an elephant butt... We never did make it to any classrooms, I think he just wanted to hang out with the students on the commons and maybe pick up a joint. He's just that kinda bear!

We made pumpkins into witches and spiders, made our own pumpkins out of construction paper, sang songs, and had cookies and juice, and then posed for pictures. From left to right: Abby (aka Spongebob Squarepants), Frankenstein (as himself), Tim (a pumpkin), Zoe (a princess), Markie (another pumpkin), and Ben (a dragon). Hope you had a Happy Halloween!!! | Reply
| | From: Robyn | Sent: 04/11/2004 18:36 | Markie at the Mall of America On our final day together Markie and I went to the Mall of America, the largest mall in the United States - and it's only 7 miles from my house!!! The mall is amazing! Not just shopping, but an indoor amusement park, fine restaurants, bowling alleys, nightclubs, and an aquarium. This is the main entrance on the east side of the mall. Markie loved riding up and down the shiny escalators in the background. At Christmastime they build a full size house in the rotunda (Markie's sitting on the second floor surrounding the rotunda) and then raffle it off to one lucky winner. But what he was really waiting for was a trip to Camp Snoopy, the amusement park in the center of the mall! He LOVED the Frog Hopper! The kids were kinda confused.... lol | | | |

The ferris wheel starts on the second floor and goes up to the glassed-in ceiling of Camp Snoopy! The most fun Markie had though, was pretending he was a prize animal at the basketball hoops! | Reply

| | From: Robyn | Sent: 08/11/2004 00:02 | After playing at Camp Snoopy, Markie had a hankerin' to go shopping. After all, the Mall of America is the mecca of shopping centers - shopping junkets are organized all over the world to come here to shop for a weekend. Amazing! Always a group of people talking in foreign tongues, wandering about with their cameras at the ready (well, the Asians anyway ) Markie tried on wigs at a kiosk - He rather liked this one - reminded him of the Beatles... He wanted to go to Victoria's secret as well. You'll notice he's grinning from ear to ear in this shot......! LOL | | | |

From: Robyn | Sent: 08/11/2004 21:05 | A little more shopping and Markie was almost done with the Mall of America. (Did I mention it's my favorite place to shop? ) All this fun we had made Markie hungry though, and as we passed Tucci Benucch he insisted on joining this couple for a last glass of wine and dessert... They were most gracious about letting Markie sit with them. Tucci Benucch is one of the many restaurants in the mall, and one of the best Italian choices. Yummmmmm! | Reply
| | From: Robyn | Sent: 08/11/2004 21:17 | Markie had a wonderful time in Minnesota! He was just like any other bear - well behaved at times, and gone wild at others. Overall he was a lot of fun. On the way home from the Mall of America, on his last night here, he managed to make one more stop. The St. Paul Police Department was kind enough to show Markie the back of a squad car, just in case he decided to get into more trouble! He's promised me that he'll mend his ways and no more wild parties, or racing motorcycles... lol | | | Reply

| | From: Robyn | Sent: 09/11/2004 20:14 | A postscript to Markie the Bear: I have one more picture of Markie I really wanted to post, but for some reason this message page is rejecting it. If I ever get it working I'll post it then. All the people who had their pictures taken with Markie at the Mall of America were strangers to me. I simply walked up to employees and patrons and asked if I could put Markie one place or another. The response of strangers is wonderful! Without exception they were most willing to help me out and thought it was great fun. The two most excited people involved were the girl in the Markie as a Prize picture, and the officer with the St. Paul Police Department! lol The girl is an employee of Camp Snoopy and when I asked if Markie could be up there amongst the other prize animals she rushed to toss one of the animals on the floor and put Markie in its place! When I told her she could be in the picture too she was all smiles! The police officer rushed in to clear it with his sergeant and then ran for his squad car and drove up to where I was standing. He was concerned that I not take a picture of his face and I told him he didn't even have to be in the picture if he didn't want to. Oh no! He wanted to be in the picture and so turned a profile for me! LOL It was great fun and I now have a bear for our group that I'm happy with! I'll start photographing him soon and start a new post dedicated to him. I like the idea of a "name the bear" contest, but, all due respect Reno, I don't think we should call him Brummie Bear. This isn't just about Brummies anymore....... | | | Reply
| | Thoroughly enjoyed that thread Robyn, and yes......I agree.........Brummie Bear indeed! Perhaps you should canvas opinion on the subject? Maybe after you have posted a picture of " Our Bear ". It is a theme that I am looking forward to. | | | |

| | The name's Politan - Cosmo Politan (think James Bond...) Cosmo was a little late coming on the scene because I wanted a bear of color (would that be an ethnic bear??) and it was most difficult to find one that wasn't brown, black or tan. But he's here now and ready to start his world adventures! He's already been to the Mabel Tainter Theater in Menomonee (Ma-NOM - o - nee), Wisconsin. This Victorian brown brick structure houses a beautiful gold gilt theater, a tribute to lumber bearon (couldn't resist) Captain Andrew Tainter's daughter Mabel, who died as a young woman. Mommy, ( Robyn ), I have arrived safely in England. The man that you posted me to was so pleased to see me that he went STRAIGHT to the pub to celebrate! Wasn't that nice of him? They are a nice Family, there's Him of course, a little loud, bossy, and never around much. His wife Bev is really nice too. She is short ( like you ), Tremendously pretty ( like you ) and is as pleased to see me as the gruff guy. There's a real BABE here too! Her name is Kelly, she's a student, home on holiday. There's a couple of young fella's too, Aidan and Owen, they are handsome young men, not at all like the gruff one, happy and laughing, kind and considerate. It's almost Christmas.....( I actually thought I was being sent as a Christmas present )....their house is decorated, there are presents under the tree already. The gruff guy says he is going to cut some Holly this week and finish things off. From what I have seen of him so far.........Christmas will be over before he finds his saw ! OMMI GOD Mom! They have a DAWG! .... FUNNIER looking MUTT you never saw ! ....The grumpy guy takes him out a couple of times a day. I don't know where they go...........but when they come back.......they smell ! Honest Mom, his boots smell SO BAD he has to leave them in the porch out front! Then he lets the DAWG......who smells worse than his BOOTS............into the HOUSE ! You wouldn't believe it!! I've been out for the day with the old man........it was cool......strange place this.........strange but cool. I'm all tired out.....I need some shut eye. I'll write you later, let you know all about it. Miss you Mom. XXXX Cosmo. P.S. Mom.......could you send me a food parcel?? A Burger? A Pizza? I don't think I like the food here...Please Mom XX | Reply

Hi Mom, We went to Oxford today to collect Kim from her rooms at College. What a COOL place!. Everything looks so old and quaint. Das got a bit upset when I started jumping around the car to get a better view of things. He says I should pronounce it Oxfud..........not Ox-FORD. They sure talk and spell funny here . Whatever........it is a really interesting place. Das said I should be able to meet at least a trillion fellow Americans here today. Was he being funny Mom?...I can't always tell. The buildings are really pretty Mom, and nearly everything is made of stone or brick! Do they have tornados and hurricanes here Mom? Das says that most of the students have gone home for the holidays, except for a few die hard party animals. Seems to me that most of the buildings here look like Churches. Is that what College means Mom? Church? Das drives like a grandma........he's sooooo slow. It took FOREVER to get to Kims rooms . I learned LOTS of new English words from Das . Most of them about other folks driving habits, traffic cops, speed cameras and the way people park their cars in side streets. He says I should keep these words a secret from you. They are real cool sounding words though Mom. Mom?.....Is a Pratt a fish?......Or someone who can't park a car for toffee? Laters Mom, Love You XXXXXX Cosmo. P.S. Mom, we found a Macdonalds today! YAAAAAAAY ! ( long way to come every day for something to eat mind ). You DID get my message about a food parcel didntcha Mom ?

We eventually got to Kim's place and I hung around while she finished packing. I was good Mom, I didn't touch or break anything, I had a cup of tea and cookies......they call them biscuits, then I had a look around the place. Mom, She has some cool stuff, Samurai swords, Broadswords, an Army uniform, football boots ( I mean soccer boots ).....a Hockey stick...( I must ask what Hockey is I didn't see any skates ). Mom....then we went around the College.........It's REAL old Mom......so cool. You'd LOVE it. Mom, I'm so glad Das took his camera, Lots of Love XXXX Cosmo.

Hi Mom, We had a day out at the grumpy Guy's parents today. They are really nice people His Mom is so kind, she talks so different from Him, his Wife and kids. He says that is because she is from Tyneside. Sounds like a mixture of Japanese and Korean, but she was kind to me. Gave me a big hug | | His sister Irene was pleased to see me too, we had a hug by the Christmas tree. I think Das said something about it being the shortest day of the year. He took his other Sister, Owen and Kimberley and me and that Dawg for a walk. We went to visit a place that you friend Candy has been too. It's on top of one of the tallest hills in their country. ( Mom..it's a molehill.. ) He says you can see the Severn Estuary on a clear day. All I could see was that stupid Dawg being chased by a pack of even more stupid dawgs It was kind of nice though, visiting a place where your friend has visited. Mom? Are degrees celsius colder than degrees Farenheit? It sure wasn't warm up there We went on to take this photograph of me and Bernadette by a tree that grants wishes. It was named by some nutty American Woman who visited here some while ago. Evidently if you make a wish here............it comes true. ( I'm wishing for a Big Mac and Fries ) We stopped off to take this pic of a Street sign....evidently it means something to that nutty American Dame. Hey.......Mom.......I went to the pub with Das , his Dad and his Sister. I like pubs Mom. Das bought me a beer. Actually...it's not beer, it's Ale. Whatever.........It tasted good. Nutty and warm. Much better than that frozen Gnat's urine that we call Beer at Home . | Mom, I'm having a great time, I miss you like crazy, but I'm having a real nice time. Merry Christmas Mom. Love You XX Cosmo

From: Robyn | Sent: 28/12/2004 19:21 | Dear Cosmo, I'm so proud of you my sweet little bear... sounds like you're behaving yourself admirably! We don't want those Brits to think you're another strident American! You've been to a lot of great places already it seems. I would have loved to see "Ox-fud" with you, but perhaps I'll get to see it in person on day. Don't worry, you can come with me. I know how you and your cousin Markie love college life. I'm glad you've met so many nice people. You ARE remembering to say please and thank you, aren't you? Please remind the grumpy man to wash behind your ears before bed. And Cosmo, we need to have a talk about drinking. I know you think you like "ale", but sweetie pie, you're too young to drink yet. I know it's difficult for you to be so far from home and the food you're used to. I'd love to send you a Big Mac and fries, but I'm afraid they wouldn't make it across the ocean before they spoiled. Perhaps you can find a good steak and potatoes - try Ireland, I hear they have recovered from the potato famine. I love you Cosmo, be good. Write soon and let me know what you're up to. Love, Mom | Reply
