Acts 16:23 And when they had struck them with many blows, they threw them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely.
Acts 16:24 He, having received [so strict a] charge, put them into the inner prison (the dungeon) and fastened their feet in the stocks.
Acts 16:25 But about midnight, as Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the [other] prisoners were listening to them,
Acts 16:26 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the very foundations of the prison were shaken; and at once all the doors were opened and everyone's shackles were unfastened.
Feet in stocks, in the deepest part of the prison, beaten and wounds needing cleaning, guarded in the dark hole with no light. What do you do? Sing? Prisoners were hearing songs of praise echoing through the darkness came a sound of light, a sound of life beyond the hole they were in? God, being in control of winds and waves and the weather, shakes the earth and the foundations of the stronghold crumbled, doors opened and everyone,,, I said everyone was set free. What is there in your life you need to be "set free" of today. During lent this is a very good time for self-examination. God will one day shake all that can be shaken. May our foundation not crumble but be secure and may we be found singing praises unto Him no matter what our circumstances are.
