God Is
Mighty
Scripture Focus: Genesis
35:10-14
"When Abram was
ninety-nine years old, the Lord . . . said, '??I am God Almighty;
walk before me, and be blameless. I will . . . greatly increase your
numbers. Your name will be Abraham'"?? (Genesis 17:1-2,
5).
When Abraham introduced
himself, people must have asked or at least thought "Where are all
of your descendants?" At that time, a name described a person.
Abraham means "father of a multitude," though he and his
wife were past childbearing years and had no children.
When God made a covenant with Abram and renamed him Abraham, God
described Himself as El Shaddai or God Almighty. The name El means
strong and often denotes God's power to bring forth life. The name
Shaddai comes from the same root word as breast. God creates and
sustains life. He nourishes His children, supplying all we need to
grow; His blessings overflow.
Abraham learned that only
Almighty God could produce a son for him and Sarah. Abraham's
descendant Jacob wrestled with God and had to become lame before he
received the inheritance he tried to take by manipulation. We also
must learn to lean on God the almighty One and not depend on our own
strength or devices.
Insight: One must die
to human expectations before God gives him or her a spiritual life
full of abundant blessings.
