The Perimeter Of His Ways

Job 26:14 Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways, and how small a whisper we hear of Him! But the thunder of His power who can understand?

I want to pick up on a conversation between "Bildad the Shuhite"(Job 25:1) and Job. He had posed the question to Job, "How then can man be righteous before God? Or how can he be pure who is born of a woman?"(V:4)

And Job threw the questions right back in Bildad’s face; "How have you helped him who is without power? How have you saved the arm that has no strength? How have you counseled one who has no wisdom? And how have you declared sound advice to many? To whom have you uttered words? And whose spirit came from you?"(Job 26:2-4)

Ouch!!! My friend, you’re on shaky ground when you attempt to mess with someone with "faith" like Job had. Be careful!!!

And then Job really laid it on Bildad: "The dead tremble, those under the waters and those inhabiting them. Sheol is naked before Him, and destruction has no covering. He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing. He binds up the water in His thick clouds, yet the clouds are not broken under it. He covers the face of His throne, and spreads His cloud over it."

"He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters, at the boundary of light and darkness. The pillars of heaven tremble, and are astonished at His rebuke. He stirs up the sea with His power, and by His understanding He breaks up the storm. By His Spirit He adorned the heavens; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent. Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways, And how small a whisper we hear of Him! But the thunder of His power who can understand?"(Job 26:5-14)

Wow!!! What a God! I’m going to paraphrase the last few words to Bildad, "As magnificent as all of these things are, what I've mentioned only represents "the mere edges of His ways!" Edges, the outer perimeters of His ways. I like that word, "perimeter," and in this instance, it’s an awesome word? The "perimeter," the outer horizons of His ways; the hushed tones of omnipotence, only the quiet whispers of His mighty voice.

My friend, are you listening to me? Who can fully understand? That Hubble Telescope, circling around out is space, isn’t anything compared to God’s sight. That’s just man’s puny effort to attempt to look into space! Your Heavenly Father pierces through all the millions of galaxies of "the heavens"(Job 9:8) and gives His attention to this tiny, pea-sized planet called Earth, reaching down to folks like you and me, knowing even the number of hairs on our heads. (it’s a little easier to count my hairs, ‘I’m bald Smile!?/FONT>

Remember that Job was sitting there with sores all over his body, with pus dripping on the ground, and probably a fever soaring beyond reality. Yes, it’s during times like that when a God-given perspective is sorely needed!

However, Job ended where Bildad should have started; "who can understand?" Yes, His judgements are unsearchable, and His ways are unfathomable, but that doesn’t mean that He is not in control, or out of touch. That doesn’t mean the He doesn’t have a plan. You may be thinking, "Rev. Russ, what do you mean? Lay it on me!"

OK, since you asked: "It means that He isn’t obligated to explain Himself to you." And because He doesn't reveal everything, you should be left with three very honest words, which are helpful coming from the lips of otherwise proud individual. And those three words should be: "I don't know."

Well, to sum all this up, "God knows, and He does all things well." He is in charge; He is the Potter and you are to be the clay. He is to be your Lord, and you, His disciple. Let Jesus be your Shepherd, because you’re a dumb "sheep."(John 10:2) God is to be your Master, and you His servant. There are some preachers who need to step down off their pedestal, and remember the "servant" part; you know who you are!!!

Are you understanding all this? You are to humble and submit yourself to His mighty hand. You are to be willing to acclimate your life to His choices for you, and willingly follow wherever He leads. And whether you’re healthy, comfortable and happy, isn’t the question. The question is, "Are you willing to submit to His will, and follow Him regardless of how you feel about it?"

I’m going to bring this to a close with what I believe is sound advice for you: Make it your determined purpose to think God's thoughts, as you acknowledge His lofty magnificence. Teach yourself to be at ease as you’re forced to utter the words, "I don't know."

It was because Job had the right perspective about God, that he was able to endure, even though he didn’t understand why.

How do you perceive God?
