God’s Will For Me - Part 2

Pastor Russ McDonald

<><><>

Yesterday I closed the Daily Meditation by saying, "This is just my conviction, but I believe God reveals His will to us in several stages. Initially, you may get a feeling of direction from God from different sources." So lets take a look at these "different sources."

1. Prayer: In order for God to speak to you, you need to be in His presence, and listening for His voice. Prayer shouldn’t be a monolog, where you do all the talking. There is a time to just shut up and listen! If you sincerely want guidance from God, why would you want to do all the talking? It’s difficult for God to impress upon you what you should do, if your lips are flapping!

2. Through His word: God speaks to you through His written word, as you study and "Meditate" upon his Holy Scripture. If you’re serious about wanting God to guide you, then the Holy Spirit will often remind you of a verse of Scripture that applies to your particular situation. That’s what I mean by "listening for His voice." His "voice" is His written word; you’re not likely to hear a booming voice from Heaven, telling you which way to go.

My friend, He has already put the answers to your questions, in His Word, and as you spend time communicating with God, and that’s what prayer should be, you could very well sense God's leading in your life.

3. Circumstances: Many times God will cause doors to open, or others to close. If you are walking in obedience to him, you have to assume that events in your life are ordered by God. They don't just happen by chance. Maybe the reason why a door has opened up to you, is that God wants you to get off your backside, and go through it!

Now, closing or opening a door which you’re not attempting to go through, wouldn’t give your any guidance. So what does that mean? It means you have to get up, and start moving in the direction which you believe if right. Then you’re giving God a chance to either open, or close the door to that particular opportunity.

4. Our heart: Sometimes the Holy Spirit will minister to your spirit, and reveal God's plan for us. When that happens, you’ll have an assurance deep in your heart, and you’ll feel God's voice guiding you.

5. Others: God can use other believers to bring you his direction. Sometimes you may be reading a Christian book, singing a song in church, or listening to the Pastor's message. It could be that one of your friends will say something that will show you God's will. God can reveal his direction to you through any of these five ways. However, even when He does, it's sometimes difficult to discern that what you sense or feel is truly God's plan for your life.

Jesus was addressing confronting an individual who has wronged you, when He stated a "principle" which can apply in many different situations. He said, "By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established."(Mat 18:16) If two or three different godly individuals come to you at different times, and unbeknown to one-another give you the same advice, then you should feel comfortable listening to their words. It’s very likely that God is using them!

I believe this is a good "principle" to follow in attempting to understand God's plan for you. Initially, you’ll probably get the direction from one of the five ways mentioned above, but now God may confirm his plan to you, "By the mouth of two or three witnesses."

After you believe that God is directing you in a certain direction, He will often confirm it to you. I’ll address that tomorrow.

Listen for God’s voice; you’ll hear it!
