i have a friend who has a recipe for homemade mineral blocks...using plaster of paris (calcium carbonate), garden lime powder, bone mean and avian vitamins.  Does anyone know if this is safe for birds?  Or does anyone know of a safer recipe?

There are various recipes on the internet for homemade mineral blocks. However, at Bird N Ways site where they have their recipes (http://www.birdsnways.com/birds/rtreats.htm), they have the following warning:

I was searching on the web to find some information on plaster of paris for my architectural model, and I came across these recipes for mineral blocks. Having birds myself, I was intrigued at first, then horrified to find that people have recipes for birds which use plaster of paris. This stuff is carcinogenic! There are warnings all over the box about inhaling and ingesting it. For the bird's sake, they can't read box warnings or refuse to use it.

I tend to be pretty cautious with my birds, and would not take a chance with them. JMO!

Abby

I wasn't planning on using it...i'm just trying to get some info to oass on to her.  It didn't sound quite right to me as soon as i saw the ingredients. Hopefully I can get some info on the appropriate ingredients for her.  She has started making bird toys and wants to make some with mineral blocks in them.

I have seen suggestions for giving Tums to birds. I haven't done it but they are calcium carbonate. I wonder if we can still get unflavored Tums? The flavored ones have sucrose and other stuff in them plus artificial coloring.
Needs to be checked out with a vet to see if they consider them safe.

The research I have been doing on this makes me wonder how many of the mineral blocks sold at pet stores contain these ingredients.

I used to give them to the birds or rather I took one and grated it over their foods...

Then I switched to pellets (FORTIFIED ONLY)and decided any additional supplements was unnecessary.

I think we can forgo these blocks as non beneficial especially when we actually don't get a listing of the ingredients. And I still see the danged feather and cage lice spray item still on the shelves.....another product to avoid....
