Gouldians used to have the reputation of being very hard to breed. I bred them for a while and found them to be very easy. I had humidifiers and full spectrum lighting. They use a small nest box rather than a cup type nest. My 5 pairs raised about 50 babies in my birdroom with a scarlet macaw, a couple of loud amazons and about 8 other big birds. I finally wore out from the cleaning chores and sold them to other breeders. In Oklahoma I couldn't get that much for mine. When I first started they sold for $65 each and later even less.
You may find that breeders will sell them for less than stores do.
They are exquisitely beautiful, aren't they?
The males have a very high pitched song and he's the cutest thing when in breeding condition. Bounces up and down on the perch with his head tucked down toward his breast and sings like crazy. Males will sing like this without a mate during the normal breeding season. They don't sing as loudly as canaries and the song sounds nothing like a canary.
