Ok everyone!  We need to get something put on these message boards!  How many quaker owners are in this community?  I have a 3 year old quaker named Buddy.  He is a normal green quaker.....Id like to get in a blue buddy....or maybe yellow (yeah right, keep dreamin' Amy).  Do you have any cute quaker stories to share with us?  Mine is very aggressive when he is in his cage...but thats normal.  When he gets out of his cage...he will sneak over to Maliki's cage...and let him out!  Maliki is my 1 year old sun conure.  They are good buddies!

Franky and everybody, I am the proud Poppa of a 4 month old quaker named Maxy.I just got her home last Sunday.I have a bare eyed 'too named Rocky also.I had a 'tiel named Founder who I lost to sickness a while back so I thought the cage had been empty long enough.I am finding Maxy so interesting. She is not at all like Rocky. At first she wasn't too vocal but as she gets more comfortable she has been making some pretty interesting noises. She can wolf whistle (thanks to training from big brother,Rock) and I think that I have heard her say hello, but I'm not positive.I don't care if she talks anyway, I love her anyhow. Her and Rocky are still quarinteened from each other for another two weeks so I don't really know how he will react. He knows that she is there, thats for sure.Of course she has a lot of work to do in the noise cataegory if she wants to even try and match Rocky's vocal abilities! Lol !! I am really enjoying her and she has quickly made her way into my heart.I"m a quaker-'too person, now!

OH --- Sensualheart ------ quit second guessing and get out there and get that bird !! Personally, I still think a 'tiel is still an excellent choice for you in your situation.BUT, there may be a quaker out there looking for you,who knows. If you keep frettin' over it and don't get out there looking then the bird that is looking for you may go with someone else.We wouldn't want that now, would we ?? Lol. GET BIRD HUNTING,HONEY !!!!

I am happy to post on Quaker info sight of our Bird Brainz. Everyone, I am like you. Learning from the bird. They are really like us, moody and have their days.
Those who have really young. Just keep talking to them repeating and repeating. Remember when we were tots how people would repeat to us over and over. One phrase at a time or one word at a time. Make it easy on both of you then add to that word.
EXAMPLE: Good morning.... Hello. Simple then add to those words.
Good morning, lets eat.   Hello baby... Hi...  Or teach bird his / her name...
Be sure to add lots of green vegetables and fruit to your birds diet. Try Chinese Pea Pods. Bird will zip through one like bullets on a belt going through a machine gun. So give few at time either by hand or in
the cup and watch. Grapes, they love em, berries, bread stick, piece of  cookie with fruit inside, ie. fig newton, chewy granola bar.
Raw hide chews..Yes ones for dogs; the long pencil thin ones so they
can hold with claw and gnaw on. Keep them busy.. Those old metal type shower curtain hooks. Can buy dozen at WalMart for what .59 if that. I loop hole type cereal , i e,. Cheerios or generic, through and afix either to tine of  cage or onto the hanging  plastic rings. Keeps them busy.
Also purchase Polly's Pastel Perch to keep their nails honed inbetween clippings...easy to install and clean.
And a really to help you out with keeping the cage clean....Take the
grate out of the bottom. Totally useless and no more people frustration trying to clean. Bird rarely walks ground anyway.  I learned this one
from Mitred.
I hope some of these tips have helped NEW OWNERS...
Please let me know if you try and have succeeded.   wendy

Hi all,
I have a 4 month old Quaker named Kiwi......I am not sure if it is a male or female but I tend to call it a he. Kiwi is a big clown, always doing things to male us laugh. He is not cage aggressive or aggressive towards anyone. He cuddles with anyone who is willing to pick him up, even total strangers! My husband and I had cockteils and doves , 14 years ago when our kids were just babies, when they all finally went to birdie heaven we decided no more birds until our kids were older. Such a loooong wait. But Kiwi was definately worth waiting for!

My best friend is a 7 year old Quaker named Bud. He only came to live with me about a year ago but he has always been in our family so I've known him all his life. Bud and I always got along well, he just always seemed to take to me. Bud lived with my grandmother for several years and they were very close. When arthritus finally put Grandma in a wheelchair and kept her pretty much homebound, Bud was a blessing for her. When she passed away, it just seemed right for Bud to move in with me. I always liked him, but I never imagined this little green bird would become such an important part of my life. What can I say? I fell in love. We know each other so well now, it seems like we've always been together. He still says things he learned from Grandma, but he's learned a lot since then, too. If there are several people in the room and no one is paying any attention to Bud, he'll say "whatcha doin', huh?" sounding exactly like me and just keep saying it louder until he gets noticed. Of course he'll let you know in no uncertain terms that he is a "pretty bird" too. It never ceases to amaze me how much personality and attitude can come in such a small green package.

I'm Mommy to Jade, an 8wk old blue Quaker. He's still on 2 feeding a day but that won't last long. He eats everything I put in the cage. He's already fledged and does 'step ups' like a trooper. He's still a little while away from that nippy stage but they all go through it. He's a real beauty, more aqua than blue. He's already pretty vocal so hopefully he will talk. If he doesn't that's alright. I have a bunch who do. Here's Jade.  Peggy

Hi Everyone,
My little green stinker is Gracee, 6yrs old, and ornery as can be. I adore her personality. I describe Quakers are the Siamese cat of the bird world, smart, clever, rotten, spunky, full of character and loads of entertainment! When she says, "Pamee.....come 'ere" I melt!
We have the same argument every time I offer her a little juice. I say the word "juice", and she takes a drink, and loudly says, "agua". It's a little game she likes to play, arguing with me, and this goes on and on...
She lets me love on her with kisses all over her little body, pets, neck massages, etc. When she's beaking-off to me about whatever displeases her at the moment, all I have to do is sweet talk her in addition to a little neck scritch, and I can settle her right down. Which is not to say I don't get attacked on occasion, when she allows no room for forgiveness for whatever it was I did, or didn't do!
When I first got Gracee, I got a cage 32" wide. The sight of it sent everyone into hysterics, but I have kitties too, and wanted to keep her safe. As it turned out, I got a more appropriate size cage eventually, and the cats.....she keeps them away!! Oh, and BTW, I'm pretty sure she is of the male persuasion as there have been no eggs, and she hates to take a bath! Gosh, I love that bird!!
love&peace~

How long do Quakers live? I had one try to take me home from a pet store, she just rolled over on her back and stuck her feet in the air in her cage and purred at me.. cooing and reaching for me with her foot. I did not have the money at the time, so I did not get her, but man she pulled my strings hard.

Crow, I've heard they can live up to 30yrs. Jade will be 3mo on the 5th and is weaned, fledged and in his 'big boy' cage. He is already starting to talk, though so far he's copying Reggie (ARN) and not me. If you get a chance to get one do not pass it up. They are funny little clowns and one of my all time favorites. I have a Quaker that is about 15yrs old. She is so funny. She loves to ring her bell while saying come here give me and makes kissing sounds. She is a riot to watch TV with. If something happens on the TV she'll keep saying UH OH, UH OH what a mess what a mess. LOL she really gets into it.

Great descriptions Amy and Peggy,
How cute your comments, but then again, you're talking about Quakers, they are nothing but cute! Jade is such a pretty color Peggy.
I always tell people interested in a bird, that Quakers are a good first choice. Gracee says "kiss me" also, another way she makes me melt!
What an amazing experience to have verbal communication with a critter! It makes for such a unique and special bond.
love&peace~
