Altho' I worked on a computer for many years before retiring, working on a PC at home and learning to do stuff has been a work in progress. I have a cheap little printer/scanner, and no matter what I did, it saved my pictures from my digital camera with a bunch of bytes. A pic of my granddaughter was 1,576,960 bytes. Too big to email to anyone, or insert in online albums. Okay, this is probably know by most people, and maybe there's a much simpler way, but.......Microsoft has a website that has a bunch of free downloads, and one of them is ImageResizer.exe. I downloaded and installed it in about 2 minutes, and opened "my pictures", and resized them to approximately 204,000 bytes with just a right click. I still have my old (huge) pics, and also the same smaller pics that say (small) behind the title. I will probably just delete those big ones. Right now, I'm still learning the basics of this computer, without any upgrades or programs, and thought I'd mention the miscrosoft download site to anyone who is clueless, like I am. I was thinking there was someone who had the problem of pics that were too large. However, it sounds like about 99% of you all have awesome setups, and are probably chuckling at me. Anyhow, this has helped me a bunch. Thought I'd mention it..... |

That was from the powertoy section right? You should be able to get it even smaller. I have that and a few other programs that have resizing on. Is that the smallest it went. I just tried that program on a pic with close to 3,000.000 bytes (3mb) pic and it went down to 49,000 bytes (49kb) Try to go to the smallest setting and see what happens. Indy |

Don't delete your old ones yet. Make a copy of the original files with all the bytes on a cd. This way if you ever want to print them out they will be better quality. I reread and it said you used the small. I should have read better. Indy |

Yeah, I think I WILL save the older bigger ones. And, yep, it's from powertoy. I thought there is probably more that I can do with it, but I was kinda in a hurry, and just wanted to make sure that I installed it right, and that it would reduce some of those billboard size pics. I was so happy to find that site of Microsofts. I also picked up a really informative magazine from Barnes & Noble today that had some stuff in it that I wanted to read. I've been waiting for years to mess around with stuff like this, and darn it, I'm going to find time to do it. |

Didn't your camera come with a program that lets you work on the pics? If not Irfanview.com is a good one. Free, too. I think it even lets you sharpen and brighten and contrast. Been a while since I used it. Also when you upload them to groups, MSN will resize those for you, just tell it to. I reduce mine to about 120 kbs, upload them and have msn reduce them down to about 48kb. That way, the ones in my pc are an ok size but the groups ones are teeny. I save only my best pics in full size so they can be printed. My son saves all pics full size, transfers them to flash drives, then deletes them from the computer. Annie |

Thanks for the Irfanview link....I had it once, lost it, and just saved it again - thanks. I'm going to spend one whole morning on this stuff....once I find just the right morning. It's the pics that have been the worst problem, so I'm finally headed in the right direction. |

I'm in the 1% without an awesome setup My computer is from 1999 Instead of a "Money" program, it has an abacus. And my version of "Word" or "notepad" is a piece of charcoal and papyrus |

Yay ~ I have some company....my computer is from 2002 which is fairly old, but you can say yours is from the "last century". Love the abacus reference. We need a lot of new stuff around the house, like a new washer and dryer, so a new computer is out of the question. Hubby DID get a Compaq wireless notebook computer, but it's for work, and I haven't even seen it for weeks now. |

Tell hubby to bring it home so you can pat it. I am seeing some mighty good prices on notebook/laptop computers lately. As low as $400. That's cheaper than a washer or dryer. What's amazing is the amount of RAM and the big harddrive they have. More than mine, and mine was a high dollar gadget, but it's over a year old. You can upgrade yours to more RAM for less than $100. I am thinking about getting more. Have you messed with your pics yet? How is it going? (Messing with something is the same as working with it. ) Annie |
